Auburn baseball drops series finale to Mississippi State, 3-1

After posting back-to-back shutouts, the Auburn Tigers weren’t able to muster enough offense to overcome a shaky sixth inning and fell 3-1 to Mississippi State in the series finale.

Auburn (17-11, 3-6) fell behind early, but tied the game on Keegan Thompson’s solo home run in the third inning, which was only the fifth plate appearance for the sophomore this season and the first home run of his career.

In the sixth, the Bulldogs took the lead for good on an RBI triple from Wes Rea and an RBI single by Ryan Gridley.

Dalton Rentz, the Auburn starter, lasted only 1.2 innings before being replaced with Izaac Yarbrough, who became the second of seven pitchers Auburn would use on the day.

Trey Wingenter was charged with the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the season.

The Tigers travel next to Birmingham on Tuesday, March 31, for a rematch with Samford, who earlier defeated Auburn 7-0 on March 10.
