Disney animator to speak in Auburn

Disney animator and digital artist John Pomeroy will share his expertise and experiences in the film industry as part of this year’s Jay Sanders Film Series at Jule Collins Smith Museum on Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m.

The Jay Sanders Film Series began in 2013 as part of Auburn University’s media studies department. Each year the department brings a guest filmmaker to the area to discuss their experiences and what it takes to work in the filmmaking industry.

Pomeroy will be the third guest filmmaker for the Jay Sanders Film Series.

“John Pomeroy is a much different artist than our two previous guests, who were documentary filmmakers,” said Susan Brinson, professor for the School of Communication and Journalism. “Viewers have been enjoying John's talents for 40 years in some of the most popular animated movies and TV shows.”

Pomeroy has worked on several notable films for companies like Walt Disney and Sullivan Bluth Studios. Some of his most well known works include "Planes" (2009), "Fantasia" 2000 (1999), "Pocahontas" (1995), "All Dogs Go To Heaven" (1989) and "The Land Before Time" (1988). He also worked on the animation in the video games “Space Ace” and “Dragon’s Lair” (1 and 2).

Brinson said hearing from professionals, such as Pomeroy, provides students in media studies with invaluable insight and information. Pomeroy’s presentation will entail the process of bringing characters to life, which Brinson said will be a great opportunity for students to learn about a different way to tell a story.

“Students who major in media studies usually are drawn to the stories that are told through film, television and music,” Brinson said. “The more professionals we bring to campus, the deeper our students' understandings of the media, which makes for great classroom discussions.”

Although the event is geared towards media studies students, Pomeroy’s presentation is free and open to the public. More information can be found on Auburn’s media studies website at cla.auburn.edu/cmjn/media-studies.
