Former Auburn police chief dies

Former Auburn Police Chief Frank “Buddy” DeGraffenried died Thursday, March 5.

DeGraffenried served in the Auburn Police Division for 33 years, retiring in 2010 after becoming chief in 2003, according to an APD press release.

Auburn Police Chief Paul Register said his prayers are with DeGraffenried family.

“He was more than a boss,” Register said. “He was always there in times of need and was like a father to many.”

Public Safety Director Bill James said DeGraffenried made a significant impact on the APD and Public Safety Department.

“Buddy was a joy to work with and you could always count on his smile and laughter to light up a room,” James said.

Police did not release how DeGraffenried died.

A date for a memorial service will be announced.
