Gov. Robert Bentley removes Confederate flag from state capital grounds
Gov. Robert Bentley ordered the removal of Confederate flags from the state capital grounds Wednesday morning, June 24, according to a report by AL.com.
According to the report, the first flag was removed from the Confederate memorial at the state capital. Other Civil War era flags were removed 90 minutes later.
Bentley told AL.com the removal was partially in connection with the events in Charleston, but mainly to avoid distraction.
"We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with," Bentley said to AL.com. "This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down."
