Auburn receives $1 million donation

The Goizueta Foundation gave Auburn University a $1 million gift that will be given to Atlanta-area students as scholarships.

According to Jessica Crutchfield, director of foundation relations, the Goizueta Foundation is a private family foundation in the Atlanta area that funds educational and charitable institutions mostly in Georgia.

Crutchfield said that an Auburn alumnus, Javier Goizueta, is a member of the Goizueta family and the University became aware of the foundation through him.

The million dollar endowment will be invested and the proceeds earned off of that will be awarded as the scholarship. There will be at least $40 thousand awarded every year for Atlanta-area students.

According to Crutchfield, Auburn chose to use the gift for Atlanta-area because there is a scholarship need for students from the area.

According to Crutchfield, the scholarships will not be awarded until Fall 2017.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the Goizueta Foundation and look forward to providing additional scholarship support to students from the metro Atlanta area," said Velda Rooker, director of University scholarships. "We anticipate the first scholarships will be awarded in Spring 2017 for the 2017-18 academic year."
