After defeating Jacksonville earlier Saturday afternoon, the Auburn volleyball team topped Samford three sets to one to earn the War Eagle Invitational tournament title.
The Tigers (3-0) and Bulldogs split the first two sets, with Auburn taking the first 25-17 before falling 19-25 in the second. Auburn got hot from there, winning the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-13, to register its third straight win to open the season.
Three Tigers were named to the all-tournament team: Freshman Brenna McIlroy was named tournament MVP after posting 45 kills over three matches in her college debut, while juniors Emily Klitzke and Breanna Barksdale were recognized for their efforts; Klitzke collected eight kills and seven blocks in Saturday's match, while Barksdale registered 14 kills against the Bulldogs.
With the win, Auburn starts 3-0 for the third time in five years under Coach Rick Nold; the Tigers also did it in both 2012 and 2013.
Auburn's next match will be Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the Auburn Arena against Florida A&M at 6 p.m.
