Shawn Johnson places in triple jump at NCAA Championships

Senior Shawn Johnson recorded the best finish by an Auburn athlete since 1998 in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

His sixth-place finish made him the only one out of five Tigers who competed at the event to place. Johnson vaulted himself into sixth on his last jump, as he leaped 53 feet, 5.5 inches.

Senior Jessie Johnson, who entered the competition ranked sixth in the pole vault, finished 13th in the event. Junior Marshay Ryan leaped 42 feet, 4.25 inches in the women's triple jump, earning a ninth-place finish.

All five Auburn athletes earned All-America honors in the two-day event at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Johnson earned first-team honors, while Johnson, Ryan, Michelle Atherley and Samantha Scarlett were all named to the second team.

Auburn will begin its outdoor track and field season at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa on March 17–19.
