Adams ready to be a “dominating specimen” in 2016

HOOVER, Ala. -- Senior nose tackle Montravius Adams had expressed confidence in Auburn’s defense and the Tigers’ upcoming season on Monday at the 2016 SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama. Adams, who has 107 career tackles, made his first appearance today at SEC Media Days.

The 6-foot-4, 309 pound lineman seemed relaxed and calm, despite his pre-interview jitters. “When I first came in I felt kind of nervous, all of these cameras in here. But now I feel good. I feel comfortable and anytime someone asks a question I’m ready to answer.”

Adams and junior defensive end Carl Lawson enter this season as the two leaders on what is viewed as an improved defense. Now that Lawson is healthy for the first time since his freshmen season, Adams believes the two can be a really good tandem on the defensive front.

“I feel like we can be really good together. Me and Carl have known each other since 11th grade. We played in the junior bowl together and we were roommates then. We stayed right beside each other … that just made us be closer as players," he said. "That’s why we’re always together. We learn from each other.”

The Tigers transition from former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to Kevin Steele hasn't had a significant affect on Adams.

“It’s actually a little the same. It’s not too much of a big difference. They’re kind of from the same background (coaching style). The only difference is how they act," noted the tackle. "Coach Steele is a little more laid back, while Coach Muschamp was a high motor guy.”

The third team all-SEC defensive lineman said he needs to be a “dominating specimen” in the upcoming season. Adams believes his skills, combining his senior leadership with overall team and work ethic, can make Auburn’s defense one of the best in the nation.

“Well I just feel like, you know, every year teams set the goals and right now my goal is to take it one day at a time and that’s our mindset and that’s what he told us to have," he said. "So we’re really just going to take it one day at a time. Get better at practice … try to do better at the game and try to win as many games as we can.”
