Closures to affect Interstate 85 and Magnolia Avenue

Two major closures on Interstate 85 and Magnolia Avenue will affect local commutes this week.

According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, there will be lane closures on Interstate 85 between mile markers 55 and 56 on both the northbound and southbound sides. The closures will last for about a week but will only affect the interstate between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

ALDOT said it advises motorists to use caution when traveling through the construction zone. The lane closures are because of construction in preparation for the Moore's Mill Road bridge replacement. According to ALDOT, commuters should expect delays and plan accordingly.

In the city, commuters should expect delays near the intersection of West Magnolia Avenue and Wire Road as the University plans pedestrian crosswalk and lighting upgrades. The intersection was closed July 23 and will remain closed through July 31.

According to the University, residents will still have access to surrounding buildings, and a detour will be available for vehicle and pedestrians by way of War Eagle Way and Village View Lane. Nearby road crossings will be available as most of the sidewalk will remain open in the area.

One TigerTransit route will be affected however. Old Row – West Parking runs in the area and will be impacted. The Edge West Apartments and Eagles West stops will not be open. Riders can utilize the Hemlock stop on West Magnolia Avenue.
