Two hospitalized after Gay Street shooting

A man and a woman were hospitalized early Sunday morning after a shooting along North Gay Street, authorities said. One remains in critical condition.

The Auburn Police Division responded to a "shots fired" call at about 2:43 a.m. Sunday at the 800 block of North Gay Street, after which they discovered the injured 21-year-old woman and 23-year-old man, police said in a press release today.

The woman was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center, treated for a single gunshot wound and released, the release said. The man was flown to Columbus Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for several gunshot injuries and is currently in critical condition, according to the release.

"A subsequent investigation determined that the suspect(s) fired shots at several people in one apartment and damaged two more apartments," the release read.

The investigation indicated that the incident was not random, the release said, and investigators are following up on leads.
