Auburn to play Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl

Auburn knows its bowl destination, and for the sixth time in school history, Auburn's headed to the Sugar Bowl.

Auburn will face No. 7 Oklahoma in New Orleans on Jan. 2 as part of the New Year's Six slate of bowl games. The Tigers came in at No. 14 in the final College Football Playoff rankings of the regular season, and because they were the highest-ranked SEC team not in the Playoff, the Sugar Bowl is obligated to take them.

This is the first time since 2005 — when the Tigers topped No. 8 Virginia Tech to cap an undefeated season — that Auburn will play in the Sugar Bowl, and it will mark the second time it will have played Oklahoma in it.

That matchup with the Sooners, in 1972, is the only time the two schools have met. That game ended in a 40-22 loss for Auburn in which the Tigers trailed 31-0 at halftime.

Auburn is 2-2-1 all-time in the Sugar Bowl, having lost the 1972 game to Oklahoma along with a 1989 matchup with Florida State, and they won the 2005 game over Virginia Tech and the 1984 contest over Michigan. The Tigers also tied with Syracuse, 16-16, in 1988.
