Auburn police sergeant injured during early morning pursuit

An Auburn police officer is recovering after being injured early Saturday morning while performing a traffic stop.

At about 2:55 a.m., an Auburn Police Division sergeant performed stopped on 2010 Pontiac G6 on North Ross Street. After stopping the vehicle, the sergeant approached the vehicle and observed a weapon in the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Derrick Demaropis Bryant, 27, began to flee after the officer saw the gun. The sergeant attempted to pull the driver from the vehicle and was knocked to the ground as the vehicle sped away.

The sergeant was injured as he fell to the ground and transported to East Alabama Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.

After a brief search, officers located the suspect and vehicle at a residence in the 500 block of Harper Ave. The suspect attempted to flee again, this time on foot, but was apprehended after a foot pursuit.

Police took Bryant, who is from Auburn, into custody and charged him with second-degree assault, fleeing and attempting to elude, resisting arrest, and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Bryant is being held on a $35,000 bond at the Lee County Jail.
