Police charge Fort Benning man with auto burglary

The Auburn Police Division arrested Jorge Alejandro Torres, 23, from Fort Benning, Georgia, April 22 on warrants charging him with unlawful breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and second-degree theft of property, police said.

At about 9 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a suspicious-person call on Interstate 85 near the Bent Creek Road exit. Officers located an individual, later identified as Torres, police said, who was riding a bicycle along the interstate.

Further investigation into the incident resulted in Torres being developed as a suspect in the case, police said. Officers recovered a backpack in his possession, which contained assorted electronics, jewelry and sunglasses, all of which were valued at over $2,000.

The property was identified as being stolen a few hours before from a 2012 Toyota Corolla, which was parked in downtown Auburn near the 100 block of Tichenor Avenue.

Police later identified Torres as the person responsible for unlawfully entering the vehicle and taking the property and detectives obtained arrest warrants and took him into custody, police said.

He is being held in the Lee County Jail on a $6,000 bond.
