City to start single-stream recycling

Residents of Auburn will soon be able to put out their recycling for weekly pickup as the city moves to single-stream recycling.

Through the Alabama Recycling Grant Fund, the City of Auburn received $288,896 for a commingled recycling program and 5,600 95-gallon recycling carts.

Any recyclable items except for glass will be accepted in the single-stream process, but Director of Public Affairs for the city David Dorton said glass can be brought to the recycling center to be processed separately.

Dorton also said the single-stream recycling could be available as soon as this fall, but until then, starting July 1, the city will no longer be able to accept plastic for recycling. Plastics will be accepted again in residents’ recycling carts when single-stream recycling starts up.
