Police tape on North Gay Street in Auburn, Ala., on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016.

UPDATE: 3:50 p.m., Sept. 22, 2017

On Wednesday, Auburn police responded to a suspicious incident on Heywood Street in Auburn, according to a news release from the Auburn Police Division.

A female teenager reported that at around 4 p.m. she and two male juveniles were walking when a heavyset white man, approximately 50–60 years old, stopped his black, four-door vehicle in the roadway and asked if she needed a ride. The female teenager declined and the man drove off. She told police that the man had thin or balding hair and was wearing a white T-shirt.

Further investigation into Wednesday's incident determined the man driving the car misidentified the female teenager to be a relative who lives in the same area.

The man, as well as other family members, were interviewed by police and confirmed the account, the Auburn Police Division said in a release Friday.
