Auburn location of Gigi's Cupcakes closing abruptly

The downtown location of Gigi's Cupcakes will be closing its doors.

In a video posted on Facebook, owner Jennifer Cooper announced the business would be closing unexpectedly after a call from the building owners informing the team that the building had been sold.

"We had no idea it was even for sale," Cooper said.

She said Gigi's was given the option to stay, but with the rent going up 30 percent and more than double in the next few years.

"Looking at all the numbers, it just doesn't make sense to continue to operate in our downtown Auburn location," Cooper said.

The company is required to be out of the building by Jan. 4 and will not be open the remainder of the holidays.

Cooper said it is a bittersweet closing for the team, as they did not expect to have to close anytime soon.

"We love it here. Auburn is a very special place to us," Cooper said. "We went to school here. We graduated from Auburn and obviously, having a business in downtown Auburn for the past six years, we have gotten to witness a lot of tree rolling."

Cooper said the closing will be an "empty spot in our hearts." Positively, Cooper pointed out the second location in Opelika, where fans of the brand can still shop for cakes and cupcakes.
