"If you just read 20 minutes a day or 20 hours over the course of the summer you can earn a T-shirt," said Ashley Brown, engagement and outreach librarian.

Summer is in full swing at the Auburn Public Library with its Summer Learning Challenge. Children and adults of all ages are invited to participate in the reading challenge.

"If you just read 20 minutes a day or 20 hours over the course of the summer you can earn a T-shirt," said Ashley Brown, engagement and outreach librarian.

The Summer Learning Challenge began on May 23, 2018, and will end Aug. 1, 2018.

"One reason we're opening up the Summer Learning Challenge to adults is so kids have reading role models during the summer," Brown said. "One of the most important things for getting kids to read is seeing adults in their lives reading."

To sign up, community members can go to the library or the library website. There is no cost to sign up for the Summer Learning Challenge.

Participants can keep track of their reading in their “Reading Star Tracker," which they receive when they sign up for the challenge.

Once participants have completed their tracker, they can come to the library to get their Summer Learning Challenge T-shirt.

There will also be events at the library throughout the summer.

  • Monday Movies – each Monday in June and July at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. watch a movie at the library.
  • Tuesdays in June – each Tuesday in June at 2 p.m learn from special guests such as Dr. Magical Balloons and the Southeastern Raptor Center.
  • Thursday Heros – each Thursday in June and July at 2 p.m. visit with hometown heroes such as Public Safety and Environmental Services.

"On June 19, we’re having the Southeastern Raptor Center, and that's always our most popular event," Brown said.

All events are free and open to the public.

The library will also be hosting two free puppet camps this summer.

"We're going to have a kid's puppetry camp," Brown said. "We're going to have a week in June and a week in July. But it's limited to 12 kids. That is probably the thing that is most special for me."

The puppetry camp is open to children ages 8-12. To register for the camp, parents can call the Auburn Public Library or email libraryevents@auburnalabama.org.

The goal of the Summer Learning Challenge and all of the events at the library are to keep children reading during the summer.

"It's very important for kids to read during the summer to keep up their literacy skills," Brown said. "Literacy is a skill that you can lose if you don't practice it."
