Auburn University’s Committee of 19 had a retreat Sunday to plan events for the upcoming year.
“There’s a couple of big events we have coming up,” said Whitney Skinner, chair of the Committee of 19.
The Committee of 19 works with the World Food Programme to raise awareness about the War on Hunger.
The committee’s first event for the year will be the E.T. York Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21. The lecture will feature James T. Morris, executive director of the World Food Programme.
At the lecture, the Committee of 19 will be making a special presentation to James Morris. The committee will be presenting Morris with the money raised for the World Food Programme and the War on Hunger.
The big event for the year for the Committee of 19 will take place Monday, Oct. 16, which is World Food Day. On this day, a World Food Day Teleconference will be broadcasted to more than 600 schools in the United States and Canada, and to all American Embassies. The teleconference will also be broadcasted on cable channels, and will be shown at several locations on campus.
During the second hour, a documentary featuring Auburn University’s model for raising awareness about world hunger will be shown.
The documentary, which is still in production, will show the work of the Committee of 19, as well as the other universities that have joined Auburn in the support of the War on Hunger. Other universities have joined with Auburn to form the “Universities Fighting World Hunger.”
“It’s a great opportunity for Auburn to be featured, but it’s an even greater opportunity for our cause to be featured,” Skinner said.
Oct. 16 will also be the kickoff for the Beat Bama Food Drive.
At the retreat on Sunday, the committee developed goals for the upcoming year.
“One of our longer term goals is to bring more schools, both public and private, into Universities Fighting World Hunger,” said Corey Shepherd, Webmaster for the Committee of 19.
Other events for the year include The Empty Bowls Banquet, This One’s for the Girls Women’s Basketball Game, Eat Less Feed More and the Second Annual War on Hunger Summit, which will be held in February.
Skinner said the committee also hopes to find ways to incorporate some of the hunger issues into the classroom.
