Agriculture is the No. 1 industry in Alabama and the College of Agriculture is celebrating the industry’s success with its annual Ag Week.

The College of Agriculture will celebrate Ag Week April 7-11 by hosting events throughout the week.

Don Mulvaney, coordinator of leadership development in the College of Agriculture, said the college has hosted Ag Week for quite some time.

“We’ve held Ag Week as long as I’ve been here,” Mulvaney said. “In recent years, this week has provided an opportunity for students to come together around a common set of experiences that promote a positive image about agriculture across campus.”

Mulvaney said this celebration is a great way to bring students from different disciplines across campus together.

Students across the College of Agriculture look forward to the week-long activities and celebration.

Jenny Givillo, a junior in agriculture economics and president of the College of Agriculture, said this provides a week of fun for students.

“Holding Ag Week each year is a tradition,” Gvillo said.  “We all have so much fun, from attending the picnic on Ag Hill to attending the womanless beauty pageant, this is a great week for us to come together and celebrate the common thread we all share — agriculture.”

The catfish dinner picnic on Ag Hill will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the event.  The womanless beauty pageant will be during the intermission of the Miss College of Agriculture pageant  Tuesday evening.

Each year, the student council of the College of Agriculture is responsible for planning Ag Week.

College of Agriculture former president, Erin Hunter, said she feels this week is a chance to celebrate agriculture and let students across campus know about its importance in our lives.

“So many people don’t understand that agriculture is a part of everything we do,” Hunter said. “It’s the towels we use, its how we get to school, agriculture is literally in every aspect of our world.”

Hunter said the highlight of the week will be the speaker for the contemporary in agriculture program, U.S. Undersecretary of Agriculture Gale Buchanan.

Buchanan will speak at the College of Veterinary Medicine at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 7.

The CAP speaker program has historically brought someone involved in issues facing agriculturalists to speak during Ag Week each year, according to Mulvaney.
