Dean of Students Johnny Green, along with the Student Government Association, sent a survey out to all students April 14 to give them an opportunity to voice their opinions about a new student recreation center.
SGA President Lauren Hayes said SGA is eager to begin working on plans for the new center.
“We are very excited that the process of planning a new student recreation center has begun,” she said. “The student recreation center project is a top priority for SGA this year, and we have created a new committee to ensure that we follow through with this initiative.”
She said she thinks the need for a new recreation center at Auburn in great.
“Most all students at Auburn know that we are long overdue for an improved facility that is comparable to or even better than the facilities at our peer institutions,” she said.
Hayes said most students are unhappy with the current Student Activities Center.
“If you ask any student on campus about our current facilities, you will most likely be bombarded with complaints about our current student act or suggestions for new facilities,” she said.
John Mouton, senior adviser to the president, said the survey will help inform SGA of what students want in the new facility.
The SGA is endeavoring to understand the students’ priorities and preferences for the amenities that could be included in the facility,” he said. “The SGA will assemble the results and inform us of their findings, which will be incorporated in the programming of the facility.”
Hayes said SGA has received feedback from a number of students so far.
“We are ecstatic to have already received over 4,800 responses and are hoping to receive a great deal more before we close the survey next week,” she said.
Hayes said she hopes to receive responses from 6,000 students so that 25 percent of students will be represented.
“The results from this survey will be extremely important as the Student Activity Center Committee prepares to present information to administration about the type of facility our students want to see on campus,” she said.
Hayes said she encourages students to complete the survey.
“I am confident that the greater the number of students who complete the survey, the stronger the message will be to administration that students are passionate about having a recreation center that we can be proud of,” she said.
Mouton said he anticipates the center to be completed in the middle of the year 2010.
Hayes said a completion date has not been set.
“SGA will be pushing for it to become a priority after the construction of the student center is completed this fall,” she said.
