Artist Judith Blazer performed a true “Tour de Force blend of Broadway, Opera, Prime TV and Soaps” Monday evening.
Blazer was hosted by the Auburn Departments of Music and Theater and the College of Liberal Arts.
According to an interview with Blazer (http://media.cla.auburn.edu/theatre/blazer.cfm), she came to Auburn from New York not only to share a sampling of her diverse musical styles and talents, but to also interact with Auburn students and instruct them “in vocal techniques and the sort of life-lessons that are crucial for every aspiring performer to learn.”
Blazer is a professional performer, actor and vocalist.
Blazer has been seen at the Metropolitan Opera, in numerous Broadway productions and has been on the voice faculty of New York University.
In addition to her extensive professional career, Blazer is committed to arts education through mentoring and equipping young artists.
Accompanied by Christopher Stephens on the piano, Blazer’s program was a mixture of musical styles, from scat, blues and jazz to operatic and musical dramas.
“I like the transitions between music and theatre — they were really smooth,” said Brooke Spivey, a freshman in theatre.
Laura Philpott, a freshman in political science, said Blazer’s stage presence made her “keep looking at her the whole time.”
Many of Blazer’s pieces were about love in its fitful seasons.
Kat Grilli, a freshman in theatre, said Blazer was an amazing performer.
“She has given us all something to aspire to,” Grilli said.
Adrienne Wilson, a theatre faculty member, said Blazer was not only “interesting, but interested,” and was remarkably “generous in sharing her expertise.”
