SGA President's Welcome Back: New year, new resolutions by president

Dear Students,

On behalf of the Student Government Association, welcome back to Auburn for another great semester! Spring is always an exciting time on the Plains, and I am sure it has a great deal in store for all of us.

This semester, I encourage you to take part in something unique to Auburn—whether it’s joining a campus organization, becoming involved with a campus ministry, volunteering with IMPACT or attending a play at the Telfair Peet Theater.

Additionally, this spring will be an extremely busy time for our athletic department, and I hope you will take the opportunity to support our many teams, from basketball and baseball to gymnastics and swimming.

I also want to remind you that you will have the chance to voice your opinion in the SGA elections this February. You will not only be choosing your new SGA President, Vice President, Treasurer and Miss Auburn, but this year, you will also be voting in a special referendum to build a new student recreation and wellness center. We all know that our student act is highly inadequate for our student body.

Staff Column: Summers away from Auburn cause stress about subleasing apartments

Even though we just got back from Christmas break, some of us are already making plans about how we are going to spend our summer vacations.

Before you start daydreaming about fun in the sun or planning for summer internships, think about what you are going to do with your apartment this summer.

If you are positive you are not going to be here this summer, the time to start looking for a subleaser is now.

I know, summer seems like it is forever away, but it will be here before you know it and if you wait too long all of the good subleasers will be taken.

A good place to start is contacting your rental company to see if they allow subleasing and if they can help you find one, but chances are you will be on your own.

If you have already attempted the obvious, asking your friends if they need a place to crash this summer, then it’s time to change your Facebook status.

You can even take it one step further and post your room for rent on Facebook Marketplace.

Auburn coaching staff retooled under Chizick

Chizick hires Malzahn to coach offense, fills three key positions to Auburn coaching staff
<img src="http://www.theplainsman.com/files/images/offense.thumbnail.jpg" alt="Mario Fannin, No. 27, and the rest of the Auburn running backs will have a new offensive coordinator: Gus Malzahn and a new position coach, Curtis Luper, at the start of the 2009 season. Rod Guajardo /ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR" title="Mario Fannin, No. 27, and the rest of the Auburn running backs will have a new offensive coordinator: Gus Malzahn and a new position coach, Curtis Luper, at the start of the 2009 season. Rod Guajardo /ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR

Gene Chizick started in mid-December with an empty cabinet on his football coaching staff.

What looked like a slow process of hiring a coaching staff heading into Christmas, has picked up steam with Athletic Director Jay Jacobs signing five coaches to contracts since Dec. 26.

Gus Malzahn was named offensive coordinator on Dec. 28 after serving as assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator as well as quarterbacks coach at the University of Tulsa the previous two seasons.

In Malzahn’s two years at Tulsa, his offenses ranked first in the nation in total offense in 2007 and second in 2008.

Staff Column: Remembering the reasons why

It is important to always have a big picture in mind when trying to accomplish something.

Most people like to take things one day at a time, but you can lose focus and forget why you even started the task in the first place.

A few semesters ago, back when I had not declared a major and had no idea what I wanted from Auburn I wondered if spending thousands of dollars on something is worth the experience.

Cut to present day, and my answer to my younger self is yes.

Once I found something that fit my interests and skills, going to class was not as tasking as I once thought it was.

Most days (not all) I actually find myself enjoying what my journalism professors are teaching me.

Plus, I have to keep in mind I am not doing this college thing solely for myself. People are watching me.

No, I do not live in some Truman Show world (mine would be boring, trust me), but I do have two younger sisters looking to me as an example.

Talk about pressure. I could not screw this up.

I am the first in my family to go to college and I do not want to be the last.

Alabama worst in mercury pollution

Alabama tops the list of the 50 worst offenders for deadly mercury pollution levels from coal-fired power plants, according to a report released last week from the Environmental Integrity Project.

Texas is home to five of the 10 “dirtiest” plants in terms of mercury pollution, but the worst plant in the country is Alabama Power’s Miller Plant in Jefferson County. Alabama is also home to three other plants in the top 50, located in Shelby, Mobile and Walker counties.

“We need to be drastically cutting mercury emissions, not holding them steady at historic high rates,” said Ilan Levin, senior attorney for the EIP.

Bring creativity to the holdiays with homemade gifts

For those college students on a budget, as most are, the holidays can be rough on the wallet.

To bust a common myth, homemade gifts are not seen as “cheap,” but rather they involve a lot of thought, work and creativity, and therefore are special to both the recipient and the giver.

You don’t have to be artistic or super creative to make someone a present, there are many different types of homemade gifts. Prices of homemade gifts will vary depending on the project.

Auburn theatre performs "Lady Windermere's Fan"

The Auburn University Department of Theatre presented its second
production of the season with Oscars Wilde’s “Lady
Windermere’s Fan” on Nov. 13 - 14, 19 - 21, and a matinee Nov. 16 at
the Telfair B. Peet Theatre.

The cast of “Lady Windermere” tackled gender and class
issues with witty bite that has come to be familiar in Wilde’s plays.
The play also punctuated the underlying theme of women’s rights and
choices. Although created nearly two centuries ago,

“Lady Windermere” still displayed relevance in the realms of the complexity of the plight of women.

Lauryn Dewey, a sophomore in political science, connected with plays honesty and timelessness.

“The
play was so relevant to today’s society, because I feel women still
have tough choices to make that are really only synonymous with women,”
Dewey said. “Trying to maintain a family, while purusing your dreams is
still a big issue with women despite our advancements.”

These issues were exactly the kind of thought provoking comments that director Daydrie Hague wanted to pursue.

Students vote on this year's final lecture speaker

On April 9, the Student Government Association will
present "The Final Lecture," a commencement style-address given by a
professor chosen by the students of Auburn University.

Before the
Thanksgiving break, upperclassmen were given the chance to nominate who
they would like to give the lecture. Now, a group of student leaders
will pick the top five candidates, said the Director of "The Final
Lecture," Rohan Kambeyanda.

Kambeyanda said students will be able to
select thier choice out of the top five candidates in the upcoming
spring elections. During the election, aside from electing new
presidents, there will be a spot for who students would like to see
give "The Final Lecture.

"Any upperclassmen can vote for a
professor they feel is worthy of that distinction and that professor
gives a commencement style address in April to Auburn University and
the community," Kambeyanda said.

Women's basketball wins tournament

The women’s basketball team returned from Miami on Sunday as champions
of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic tournament. The Tigers beat host team
Florida International 63-52 to capture the title.

“It was our
first time this year to play in a tournament and have an opportunity to
play for a championship,” said head coach, Nell Fortner. “I’m real big
on that and I think anytime you get to play for a championship, it’s
important. Kids get real competitive and they want to take that trophy
home and I think we did a good job winning it.”

Sophomore Alli
Smalley was named the tournament’s MVP and seniors Dewanna Bonner and
Sherell Hobbs were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“It was an honor,” Smalley said. “The main thing is we won the tournament and went 2-0.”

Smalley scored 9 points in the opener and 21 points in the final to average 15 points in the two tournament games.

Jacobs: 'I was shocked'

Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs held a press conference Thursday, hoping to clear up the situation surrounding Tommy Tuberville's resignation Wednesday afternoon.

Jacobs said he was as shocked as anybody at Tuberville's decision to step down after several weeks of reiterating his desire to stay on as the head coach at Auburn.

"To say the least, I was shocked," Jacobs said of his conversation with Tuberville Wednesday afternoon. "After asking him three times if he would change his mind, he convinced me it was the best thing for him and his family to take a step back."

Jacobs said Tuberville had told him Monday that he wanted to stay head coach for at least 5 more years and see both his sons through high school in Auburn.

"Up until Tuesday morning nothing was different," Jacobs said. "I told the president Monday morning that if Tommy wants to stay here five more years, my goal is to see him through five more years."

Despite walking away from his contract, the University will still honor Tuberville's buyout clause of close to $6 million.

End to Tuberville Era Premature

Well, now you’ve done it.

The Auburn fans and University administration calling for the head of Tommy Tuberville got their wish.

Tuberville stepped aside, and who could blame him?

To even think firing Tuberville was an option was insult enough to leave the program he resurrected 10 years ago.

Shame on you Auburn fans.

How quickly you forget the unprecedented accomplishments Tuberville racked up in his decade at Auburn.

Where was the football program when he stepped in following the Bowden era? In shambles.

He did what no one could have expected. He elevated Auburn from the ugly stepsister of Alabama to the national powerhouse with high expectations year in and year out.

Those extra ordinarily high expectations he created were also what doomed him.

One mediocre year and all was forgotten.

One year in 10.

One year where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

A lot of the blame for this year’s faults was placed on Tuberville, and most of them rightfully so.

IS TUBERVILLE GONE?

Tommy Tuberville

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, The Birmingham News reported Tommy Tuberville will not return in 2009 as head coach of the Tigers’ football team.

The News also reported multiple sources from the University confirmed Tuberville’s departure, but could not confirm whether he resigned or was fired.

Television station WHNT-19 out of Huntsville also confirmed Tuberville’s firing from a close source in the Athletic Department.

Tuberville met with President Jay Gogue Monday and Athletic Director Jay Jacobs Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss his position for next year.

Rumors about Tuberville’s security at Auburn have been rampant after Auburn’s 5-7 season, the worst in Tuberville’s 10 years at the program.

His overall record is 85-40.

At the time of print, no official announcement had been made from the University concerning Tuberville’s position.

The East Alabama Food Bank and Auburn University have battled it out against the West Alabama Food Bank and the University of Alabama in a food fight since 1994.

This past drive yielded the most donations in Auburn/Alabama Food Drive history.

However, the University of Alabama was able to raise 270,000 pounds to Auburn’s 212,199 pounds.

Alabama took the lead after a generous donation from Alabama head football coach Nick Saban, which put them over the top for a victory in the last week, said Brad Cink, assistant director for the food drive.

Dean Foy - A lasting legacy? Part 4

Despite recent outcry, students still torn on how to remember Foy
Dean Foy

To some, Dean of Students Emeritus James E. Foy is just that, a former dean of students.

But to others, he is more than just a name on a building or information desk, he is an Auburn icon.

Foy has been a part of Auburn history from his role in the integration of the University in the ‘60s to his War Eagle Welcome at the dedication of the James E. Foy Information Desk this past November.

“During the time when there was so much unrest in the country, during the Vietnam War, toward the end of it, there were demonstrations at Auburn, too,” said Lowell Ledbetter, who worked with Foy from 1966-1990. “He handled them very, very fairly, and Auburn did not have a lot of controversy over such things.”

Alabama State Treasurer Kay Ivey said during her time as a student leader at Auburn from 1963-1967, Foy was always accessible to students.

10 years after Board controversy, relationship with students differ

Tensions were high 10 years ago among the Board of Trustees, students and alumni when Auburn football coach Terry Bowden announced his resignation.

Today, the relationship has a different tone.

Members of the Board of Trustees said the relationship between the board and students has improved during the past few years.

Sarah Newton, who has been a member of the board since 2004, said she has always seen open communication between the board and students.

Newton, who represents District 7, said one way the board is informed of what students want is by listening to SGA presidents from Auburn University and AUM, who both sit at the table with the board during their meetings.

Newton said their advice is important because they “have their hand on the pulse of the campus.”

“We need their input, and we do call on them to speak,” Newton said. “I just think that their participation is key to ensuring that the students’ perspective is part of the decision making.”

Some students buckle under combined stress of school, family and holiday shopping.
<img src="http://www.theplainsman.com/files/images/holiday-hassle.front-feat.jpg" alt="John Denson, a sophomore in business: displays an uncomfortable look while thinking of the stressful holiday season quickly approaching.

Holidays are joyous, festive and merry. Well, most of the time.

The holiday season can also be stressful for many, college students included.

Many factors can contribute to unneeded anxiety.

Ted Dempsey, a junior in RTVF, said finals are a stressor for college students.

“Right before the holidays is the worst time, and even when finals are over, students can still be stressed to find out the final grades,” Dempsey said. “And even after that, students can still worry about spring semester classes.”

Matt Cole, a junior in political science, said studying during finals adds to stress because students do not have time to get all of their shopping done.

Generation gaps concern in workplace

Another class of Auburn students will graduate and prepare to enter the workforce Dec. 19.

These graduates will face the challenge of working not only alongside peers at their new jobs, but also with the three previous generations: Generation X, Baby Boomers and Traditionalists.

This can be a daunting task when generation gaps are taken into consideration.

Patrick Deery, director of Human Resources Development at Auburn University, described the work ethic of the Millennial Generation.

“They tend to be multi-taskers and are technologically savvy,” Deery said. “They want to lead by pulling together. They want to see collaborative organizations, not hierarchal organizations with a chain of command, but rather teams where everybody has the opportunity to participate as the leader.”

One issue Millennials and previous generations often disagree on is that of work hours.

Milk: Friend or foe?

It seems every time people turn around lately, there is a new public enemy on the loose.

This danger, however, is not your common gun wielding bank robber or killer.

This villain is the food we ingest everyday, with some of the latest offenders being things as varied as peanuts and popcorn

This latest target may, however, be a bit more shocking.

It is something that most Americans consume on a daily basis.

The culprit is milk.

In 2007, the average American drank or consumed as a dairy product around 213 pounds of milk and dairy items, such as cheese, yogurt, or ice cream, according to the American Dairy Association.

This study included many children, some with allergies and other illnesses that have been linked to drinking milk.

Diabetes rate rises because of obesity

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has almost doubled in the last 10 years, according to the Center for Disease Control. Roughly 90 percent have type II diabetes, which is frequently associated with obesity.

Suresh Mathews, assistant professor of nutrition and food science, said the rise in obesity and the rise in type II diabetes are so connected “If you compare the two graphs, you can almost overlay one on top of the other.”

Dr. Frederick Kam, medical director of the Auburn University Medical Clinic, said there are several factors which have contributed to the increased prevalence of obesity, which in turn has led to an increase in diabetes.

More than 60 percent of the American population is overweight, with many being overweight since childhood. He also attributed it to a decrease in physical activity.

And because people metabolize blood glucose through activity, sedentary lifestyles and sugar-laden foods make this process more difficult.

Electronics top holiday wish lists

Rod Guajardo /ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR

For Christmas 2008, the lighting on the Christmas tree and the traditional railroad track circling its base aren’t the only electronics that are popular.

For some students, it is out with the Nintendo 64 and in with the Nintendo Wii.

As the use of technology increases, more students are filling their Christmas lists with high-priced electronics.

Frankie Thomas, a junior in exercise science, said he has the PlayStation 3 on his Christmas list, but at approximately $450, it is priced too highly.

“One electronic that I’m going to get is the Wii,” Thomas said.

Hilton Savage, a senior in Africana studies, agrees and thinks the economy is playing a part in Christmas shopping.

Dressed to impress: students ask for new threads this holiday

JD Schein / PHOTO EDITOR

With the Thanksgiving holidays and the long lines of Black Friday complete, nothing signals more to students that Christmas break is only weeks away.

Not only does the Christmas holiday bring about family time, a break from school work and new memories, shopping for clothing is also popular this season.

For students like Paris Woodfin, a junior in electrical engineering, designer clothing with a spin of his original style would be the ideal gift.

“Well, the type of clothing I’m asking for is definitely either Christian Audigier, Ed Hardy or Ralph Lauren, although I’m open to anything along the lines of an edgy or comfortable look,” Woodfin said.

Jamare Lane, a senior in computer science, is going the opposite way and is putting business clothes on his Christmas list.

“As a gift, I’ll proudly give some socks,” Lane said.

Reel Review: Quantum of Solace

New Bond film doesn’t measure up

Our Rating (out of 5):

Remember how wonderful “Casino Royale” was, how it added a liberal splash of Jason Bourne to the Bond cocktail and made something that fit in the modern era as well as holding true to the classic character?

I don’t think any of us stopped and considered just how lucky they’d been to get away with it.

There is perhaps no better proof of this than the latest Bond film, “Quantum of Solace.”

Picking up moments after “Casino” ended, “Quantum” explores Bond’s response to Vesper’s death and uncovers a highly connected worldwide crime syndicate known only as Quantum.

Along the way, he teams up with a Bolivian spy Camille (Olga Kurylenko) and takes down environmental terrorist and Quantum member

Sharps & Flats: Coldplay returns to home away from home

Coldplay on stage: CONTRIBUTED“We have, as of yet on this tour, been to England. But we’ve been to Atlanta twice.”

While it’s debatable whether Coldplay is the world’s biggest band, it is undeniable that they dominate both England and the UK in popularity.

So for Chris Martin, the band’s star lead, to compare their home with Atlanta, Georgia speaks volumes to their growth.

The band claims that it was a 2000 performance at The Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta that gave them their breakout performance in the States and helped launch their success worldwide.

Performing to 20,000 people in the Philips Arena on Nov. 11 symbolized their continued success.

As Coldplay took the stage, the recorded song slowly rose in volume over the speakers, and the live performance took over as the climax shifted it into high gear, with white lights absorbingly flashing from every angle and the band in full view.

Clad in white New Balances and pushing a baby jogger, Skip Potts is trekking across America. He originally planned the trip as a way to see more of the United States, but sometime during his planning he decided to bring a charity along with the laptop, camera equipment and extra clothes he hauls in the jogger.

People for Educational Equality, Potts’ charity, supports community-based education programs. Their vision is “To assist and inspire community driven educational projects and improvements which are sustainable and can have a measurable impact on the schools or communities involved.”

Potts said while he was in Europe he discovered he enjoyed himself the most when he toured a city by walking through it.

“I’d go on vacations in places like Cuba or Egypt, and I found I was happiest when I was just walking around the city and seeing it.”

Our View: New ‘right of conscience’ rule too far, refuses treatment and information

In the last days of his term, President Bush and his administration are planning to announce a new rule which would broaden the reach and effects of the current “right of conscience” rules.

The “right of conscience” rules currently state, and have for over 30 years, doctors and nurses can refuse to perform procedures they are morally opposed to, most notably abortions.

The new reach of the rule would allow doctors and nurses to refuse to offer information or advice to patients regarding other avenues for receiving their desired procedure.

It is The Plainsman’s belief that no person should have to take part in activities they feel would result in a guilty conscience. But we also believe no person should have their physical rights infringed upon by the moral beliefs another person either.

The wording of the proposed rule we read is too broad, and although proponents say it is targeted mainly at abortion, the possible applications of this rule are dangerous.

Our View: Wishing a relaxing break to all, and saying a fond farewell to some

We hope all students enjoy their break and come back refreshed and ready to learn. We, like you, will be using this time to hang out with family and catch up with friends we have not seen in a good while. But when we come back, we will be short a couple staff members.

Katie Noland, our managing editor, is graduating. Staff members are going to apply for their concealed weapon’s permit in remembrance of her work here.

Julie Clark, our Intrigue editor, has had enough of us, we guess. Thank you for letting us laugh at serious illnesses, Julie.

We are losing two copy editors after the break: Jordan Long, and Julian Kersh. Jordan is graduating, and Julian is just going to be awesome somewhere else.

They both tried valiantly to keep our pages typo-free, but sometimes we were just too much for them. Thank you, both.

Alli McGuinn, our associate campus editor, showed us all up with her “Madagascar 2” teasers in our editing and design class. She will be moving on to show other people up. Thanks, Alli.

Letters to the Editor: Possible solutions for the Student Center

Editor, The Auburn Plainsman:

After reading the article in The Plainsman concerning the Senate’s decision to vote down the Foy resolution, many thoughts ran through my head.

The most disturbing part had to be the quote from Senator Abby Jones claiming that students see Dean Foy as “the cute, old guy that says ‘War Eagle’ at pep rallies.”

Personally, I think this is a ridiculous statement.

Dean Foy represents the Auburn spirit that many students claim as their reason for attending Auburn. It hurts that one of our own students and on-campus leaders has discredited the work and lifetime achievements of someone so dear to the student body.

Not to mention stereotype and patronize him by calling him a “cute, old guy.”

Ms. Jones is my Senator for the College of Liberal Arts and a fellow Student Recruiter.

Giving tours is a privilege at Auburn University, and numerous times I have been asked by prospective students and their families why we won’t honor one of our most esteemed deans and Auburn family member by transferring his name to the new Student Center.

Letters to the Editor: The Plainsman’s Foy anger directed at incorrect targets

Editor, The Auburn Plainsman:

I promised myself that I would not get involved in the Student Center naming issue, but the last edition of The Plainsman finally drove me to speak out.

Let me just say that I love Dean Foy... but I have to agree with Abby (who was so unfairly quoted in the “Plainsman’s view” last week).

The students who are at Auburn University right now and who will be using the Student Center in the next few years have not experienced

Dean Foy as anything but the “cute old man that says War Eagle at the pep rallies.”

Rather, all that we know of him are the stories and the legacy that he left behind.

Please do not think that the members of Senate nor the Board of Trustees intend to forget about him completely.

It is insulting to think that anyone at Auburn University could really believe that the only thing the Board of Trustees cares about is money, or that the members of SGA Senate want Dean Foy to be forgotten or disregarded in the future.

Letters to the Editor: The Auburn University Marching Band was bright side of the season

Editor, The Auburn Plainsman:

We all know Auburn has had a rough football season.

Many times this semester we have had one less reason to get out of bed on Monday mornings after a disappointing loss and sometimes find our Auburn spirit a little less radiant than usual.

While I am still very proud of our team, I have found myself increasingly proud of the AU Marching Band.

Each weekend they get us riled up for the game and their loud and familiar sound brings our spirit to life.

And although many do not realize it, these students dedicate most of their weekend to the Auburn football team and fans: from late afternoon Friday to early morning Saturday practices, they give us their all.

You might be thinking that this is not so unusual for your average SEC marching band, which is true. But this season they have proven that they are certainly no fair-weather fans.

What lightens my heart most after a bad play or game are their resounding musical cries, which never, ever falter if the score takes a turn for the worse.

Staff Opinion: It’s been (not) fun George, but thanks (not) really

As I sat down to write this column, I realized two things were simultaneously coming to a close: our fall semester and the final term of a president.

So I’d like to dedicate this tiny space of my collected thoughts, memories and grievances to our out-going president, George W. Bush.

For more than a year now, I’ve kept a little, almost unnoticeable application on my Facebook profile for moments when I need a pick-me-up or some uncomplicated inspiration.

It’s a countdown clock beside the smirking face of a man most Americans first loved, but now pretend they never knew.

The clock’s purpose is to serve as a constant reminder that W.’s time as commander in chief is finite, dwindling and expiring ever so slowly.

And besides giving me the joy and entertainment of occasionally watching the seconds tick away, the clock has taught me many virtuous things.

First and foremost, patience.

W. has shown me that one must practice patience when his or her leader consistently does the exact opposite of what needs to be done.

Staff Opinion: Looking both backward and forward

The lowest point of my academic career came at the end of my third semester at Auburn. I hated my major, wasn’t doing well in classes and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.

To this day I have no idea what sparked me to walk into the The Plainsman office, then buried in the basement of the former Foy Student Union. I was looking for something to be good at, something to give me some kind of direction.

Looking back, that was the best decision I could have ever made.

The Plainsman is much more than a campus newspaper. The office became my second home, and the staff became my second family.

The later at night it got, the more I cherish the memories. Chair races, lamp throwing and paper burning ... Where did we come up with this stuff?

As I finish up my last issue of The Plainsman, I am filled with both sadness and relief as I say goodbye.

To the staff:

I wish everyone could know the amount of work that you put into this paper each week.

Although I am the oldest-surviving staff member, some of you have been with me for awhile.

Rod Guajardo / ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR

With finals approaching, students will have a place to go to be able to help them get the most out of studying. The Ralph Brown Draughon Library will be open for 24 hours every day from the first day of finals to the last, where it will then go back to its normal schedule.

Communications and Marketing Specialist Donna M. Walker wants students to know that the library and its staff are available and want to help with anything they can.

“During finals, we stay busy all the time, but we have space available whether they want individual, group or quiet study,” Walker said. “We hope the students will come take advantage of everything we have to offer.”

Directors take leading role in Thanksgiving Day Parade

Rosener (left), Good (Right)

The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade marched through the streets of New York City this year with three Auburn representatives.

Director of bands Richard Good co-directed the third annual Macy’s Great American Marching Band.

Associate director of bands Doug Rosener served as the percussion instructor of the band, which is comprised of select high school students from all 50 states.

The band, which was also co-directed by Jon Woods of Ohio State University, featured 185 musicians and approximately 50 flags and dancers.

Head Auburn drum major Nick Smith also served as the Macy’s drum major this year.

“This is a great honor to those selected because the audition process is open to everyone in the United States,” Smith said. “Those that are selected sent in video of themselves playing their instruments and filled out an application. A committee selected the students that would participate.”

Students get looney for Lebo’s Lunatics

The men’s basketball season is up and running and so are Lebo’s Lunatics.

The now 300-strong group is suiting up in their Lebo’s Lunatics shirts and cheering the 3-3 Tiger team.

“We’re not just trying to fill seats, but we’re also trying to provide an atmosphere that will intimidate other teams,” said Kurt Sasser, the president of this year’s Lebo’s Lunatics. “So the thing that the crowd should expect this year is it should be a lot more intense.”

This is Lebo’s Lunatics’ first year to be a University and Senate approved student organization.

“Lebo’s Lunatics has always been kind of there, but it’s never been set as an organization,” Sasser said.

The group was made into an official student organization because of Dr. Gogue’s concern over Auburn basketball’s low attendance, which was ranked lowest in the SEC last year.

Though Auburn has had low past attendance, Sasser said, this is a big season with many TV games and match ups with 5 teams, which made it to the NCAA tournament last year, not including the big SEC games.

Rolling Toomer’s Corner after an athletic win is one of the oldest traditions at Auburn, and now this tradition can be given as a gift.

Anyone can have their own Toomer’s tree growing right in their own backyard.

The School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences has been collecting acorns from the original Toomer Oak trees since 2003, to plant, grow and to sell during football seasons.

“This year we have approximately 486 trees being sold,” said Lane Messer, student services specialist in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. “We sold 20 during Homecoming weekend and are also being ordered off of Tigerrags.com.”

Students celebrate home away from home feast

L’Action de Graces. Acción de Gracias. Thanksgiving is a difficult word to translate because it’s only celebrated by Americans.

So what happens when hundreds of foreign exchange students remain behind while others trek home?

Florence Holland, employee in the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, said foreign exchange students can feel abandoned.

This year, the Office of Diversity created Home Away from Home, a dinner geared toward international students Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 5:30 p.m.

“We are glad to provide this reception, so that people can have a holiday feel-good and not feel deserted,” Holland said.

The dinner was geared toward international students, but anyone was welcome.

Holland was primarily responsible for coming up with ideas for the event. Her staff took care of many details such as finding a caterer and choosing the location.

Holland said this was the second University-sponsored international holiday dinner.

Nurses give disaster preparedness demonstration

The Alabama Department of Public Health and Auburn School of Nursing will have a disaster response demonstration on Dec. 4.

The demonstration is taking place near gates 14-18 of Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Nursing professor Constance Smith Hendricks said this gives senior-level nursing students and the community an opportunity to see how the ADPH operates.

“We are hoping that the community and the campus community will take the opportunity to walk through to see what happens before we need to know about it,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks said the disaster unit the ADPH is setting up is a piece of a mobile hospital.

“Students can see what preparedness is about and hopefully encourage them to volunteer with disaster preparedness in the state,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks said it takes place in the fall to coincide with the University’s disaster preparedness course. The ADPH’s visit to the Auburn campus will be an expanded visit.

Alabama breaks the streak; topples Auburn 36-0

Everyone took the blame for the 36-0 beatdown Alabama put on Auburn Saturday.

Everyone.

Tommy Tuberville took the blame. The rest of the coaches did the same. Even the players took the loss on their shoulders.

“It’s totally my fault,” Tuberville said. “I made the mistake, it’s not theirs.”

Junior cornerback Jerraud Powers said the loss was the toughest of his career.

“It started off as a hard fought game, but as it went on, they got the best of us,” Powers said. “It’s tough. We’re going to have to deal with this until next year. We’re the ones playing every week. We should take the blame.”

A turbulent season of coaching upheaval and failed expectations came to a deafening halt Saturday.

What went wrong? Everything.

Auburn fans do not talk about the number six anymore.

Put away the T-shirts. Tear off the bumper stickers. It’s over.

Like all the “McCain / Palin ‘08” stickers still adorned by pick-up trucks around Auburn, they must be purged of your vehicle’s bumper.

Do not honk if you sacked Brodie Croyle.

Don’t even honk if you’re a trucker with kids screaming at you to let it rip.

While we’re on the subject, get rid of your “Baby on Board” sticker. Who cares? You could have Baby Jesus tucked away in the back seat; I’m still going to swerve by you to make the light.

And if you have a “My kid was an honor roll student at Anytown USA Middle School,” you ought to be shot. (Maybe just in the thigh, but still.)

Same goes for sports numbers with your kids names stuck on your bumper.

Unless that kid rushed for 1,500 yards his senior year and bought you your Hummer with his NFL signing bonus, you should tear that sticker off right away.

Waller, Sullivan lead Tigers in win over George Washington

Auburn recovers from double-digit halftime deficit in victory

The Auburn men’s basketball team improved to 2-1 Nov. 22 with an 83-71 victory over the visiting George Washington Colonials.

George Washington, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, proved to be no pushover, dominating Auburn in every facet of the first half.

Damian Hollis’ 13 points helped the Colonials outrebound, outscore and outshoot Auburn in the first half.

The Colonials outshot Auburn 56.7 percent to a meager 36.4 percent and were able to rattle in 10 three-point field goals.

George Washington’s play helped build a 15-point lead, and at the half, Auburn was left looking for answers.

Fortunately for Auburn, Tay Waller provided those answers.

Waller led the team in scoring with 19 points, 15 of which came from behind the arc.

TUBERVILLE RESIGNS AS HEAD COACH

Special Issue: Thanks Tommy (PDF)

Tommy Tuberville stepped down as head coach Wednesday afternoon following days of discussion with Athletic Director Jay Jacobs.

The move came following a turbulent 5-7 season that saw Auburn miss out of a bowl birth.

In a decade at Auburn, Tuberville amassed 85 wins and one SEC Championship.

Tuberville resigned only four days following a season-ending loss to Alabama Saturday.

Jacobs said the University will honor the buyout terms of his contract.

Tuberville and the rest of the assistant coaches will be paid according to their respective contracts.

“We appreciate everything Tommy has done for this program, this University and the Auburn community over the last 10 years,” Jacobs, who became Auburn’s 14th AD in December 2004, said. “We wish Tommy and his family nothing but the best.”

As for the search for the next head football coach at Auburn, the future is uncertain.

Jacobs said Auburn will begin looking for a new coach immediately.

Golf finishes 12th in tournament

The Auburn men’s golf team has completed its first tournament this weekend in Rocky Face, GA. It tied for 12th in the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.

Coach Mike Griffin was proud of his players' performance, even though they seemed to struggle at times. Griffin acknowledges the fact that the team is made up of young players and attributes the adversities to inexperience.

“The course was challenging,” said Coach Griffin. “It’s hard to say you have any expectations when you have four players going into a tournament for the first time.”

The only player on the starting squad with any significant tournament experience was senior Glenn Northcutt, who finished 1 under par and tied for seventh place. Northcutt played the No. 1 position while the team’s other senior, Keith White, played the No. 4 spot.

Rounding out the other positions were junior Cole Moreland at No. 2, true freshman Kyle Kopsick at No. 3 and true freshman John Stembridge playing at the No. 4 spot. Stembridge was a standout on the team, finishing 5 over par and tied for 33rd.

Women's basketball begins practice for '08-'09 season

After an appearance in the NCAA tournament last year, the Auburn women’s basketball team has begun practice for its 2008-2009 season.Nell Fortner has been the head coach of the Tigers since 2004 and is coming off of a year in which her team had at one time been ranked 14th in the nation. It also beat two top 25 teams and finished 7-7 in SEC play.

Fortner is just as excited about the players she has this year, and she and her players have high expectations for the upcoming season.

“I feel a sense of urgency from most players just knowing what we have in front of us,” Fortner said. “The opportunity and the potential of this team has made practices more competitive and a lot more fun.”

One of the key improvements Fortner is trying to work on is controlling the speed of the game and using the team’s depth to their advantage. "Right now we're really working on pushing the ball and attacking the basket,” said Fortner. “We're looking to really push the tempo of the game for forty minutes and just try to wear people out."

Auburn swimming and diving teams went on the road to face off against Alabama. Auburn claimed first and second in the women’s 200 freestyle relay, the first event of the day. Alana Dillette, Rachel Goh, Melissa Marik, Ava Ohlgren swam for a combined 1:45.91 and first place.
Swim and dive teams face off against Georgia

The University’s swimming and diving team, ranked No. 7, competed in Athens, Ga., on Friday.

The season-opening dual meet was the first time the University’s team met UGA this year.

“This was our first dual meet of the year, and I felt like meet went reasonably well,” said Head Coach Richard Quick. “I saw a lot of thing we can work on and I saw a lot of things we can work with. We are encouraged about the future.”

The men’s team came out on top, beating the Georgia Bulldogs, No. 9, 163 – 136, and the women’s team lost to the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs, 167 – 128.

“We knew the Georgia women would be extremely challenging,” Quick said. “They are a very talented, and I would say their team is more talented than ours is at this point; however, I do not believe they are a better team than we are. Talent usually performs better early in the season, and if you are willing to outwork them, you have a chance to beat them in the end.”

Dan Mazzaferro and Kelly Marx brought home winning scores in the diving events.

Volleyball loses to Ole Miss, Arkansas

Winning the first set just wasn’t enough for the young Auburn
volleyball team (5-18, 0-12 SEC) during their match with Ole Miss
(10-10, 6-5 SEC) that ended in a loss of 3-1 in Oxford, Miss. on Friday
night.

And senior Jessica Glover’s 1,000th career kill wasn’t enough
to help them close out the match against Arkansas in Fayetteville on
Sunday afternoon, which ended 3-2 in favor of the Razorbacks.

Head Coach Wade Benson cited inability to capitalize on leads to bring home a win as factor in the Tigers’ losing streak.

But he said the numbers do not serve justice to the improvements the team has made over the course of the season.

“We’re definitely getting better,” Benson said. “That’s what it’s about.”

Glover said it felt great to win the record, but it hasn’t been her main focus this season.

“It was a surprise to me because I wasn’t focused on it. I was focused on playing the game.”

Glover said she has been working on leading the team by playing the best she can during matches.

The University’s cross country team competed in the NCAA Championship, Nov. 24, in Terre Haute, Ind., with the men’s team bringing home fifth place overall and four All-Americans.

This year was the first time the men’s team has made it to the NCAA Championships since 1985.

LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course held the men’s 10K and women’s 6K.

There, the men went in to the race ranked twelfth nationally and managed to move up six places and have three runners finish within the top 30.

Coach Peter Watson said the team was healthy and excited going into the race.

“Our goal going in was to be top ten, and we ended up in sixth,” Watson said.

Sophomore runner Holly Knight represented the women as the only female runner for the University.

“At Regionals, the top three women that aren’t on a team heading to Nationals are chosen to race as individuals,” Knight said.

The Alabama Space Consortium hosted its 19th annual awards luncheon at the NASA Educator Resource Center in Huntsville on Nov. 4.

This year, the consortium awarded 50 students from seven Alabama universities $325,000 in scholarships and fellowships for research or careers in space-related fields or science and math education. Seven of those students came from Auburn, including two graduate fellows and six undergraduate scholars.

“Each state has its own Space Grant office, and we receive all of our money from NASA,” said Debora Nielson, assistant director of the Alabama Space Grant Consortium. “We try to give that money out to students who are interested in working for NASA eventually.”

COME FLY WITH ME

Aviation classes offer practical and unique experiences for students who dream of working in the clouds
Auburn University provides a fleet of airplanes as learning tools for all aviation students.: Rod Guajardo / ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR

On a clear fall day, the orange and blue control tower at the Auburn-Opelika Robert G. Pitts Airport stands out against the white freckles of planes resting on the landing strip.

Each plane is dressed in blue and orange stripes down its sleek side, with AU on its sharp tail.

“There’s an old saying that ‘planes never go out of style,’” said Kyle Barr, a flight instructor and junior in professional flight management.

And neither does Auburn students’ interest in the program.

Auburn offers two aviation degrees: aviation management and professional flight management.

“Aviation management is for individuals interested in the aviation or aerospace industry outside the cockpit,” Watson said.

The professional flight management degree has the pilot certification courses built into it and is designed for students desiring to become professional pilots, Watson said.

All aviation students are encouraged to become certified as private pilots.

“Private pilots mean they have their certificate, but they can’t fly for hire or compensation, whereas a commercial student once he gets his commercial certificate, can get paid to fly,” Barr said.

SGA Senate rejects Foy resolution 16 - 11

Going once, going twice, sold for the price of $25 million.

The Student Center will remain unnamed until someone donates half of the construction costs, according to the SGA.

An SGA resolution, calling for Dean Emeritus James E. Foy’s name to be carried over to the Student Center in some capacity, was denied in a vote, 16 - 11, at SGA Senate Monday night.

“This resolution is asking the Board of Trustees and administration in some way to put Dean Foy’s name on the exterior of this building,” said Brandon Demyan, Senator for the College of Liberal Arts, when he presented the resolution.

The resolution did not put limits on how Foy’s name would be put on the building. Demyan said some possibilities include raising money or doing a dual name.

“The issue is whether or not this student Senate would like to stand up and say that we would like for it to happen,” Demyan said. “We’re not telling the Board of Trustees they have to do it in one certain way or another, that’s not our place to do that.”

Dean Foy - A lasting legacy? Part 3

1978 a year full of remembering a man by honoring his name
Dean Foy

“Meet me at Foy” is a phrase students were first able to utter in 1978, when the Auburn Student Union was named after Dean of Students Emeritus James E. Foy, in honor of the man who served Auburn University’s students for 28 years.

While Foy stepped down as dean of students on March 31, 1978, after leading students through the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, he has never truly left the University.

“Whereas the Auburn Union represents the center of student life, we can think of a no more fitting location in which to establish a tribute to Dean Foy’s goals and ideals,” according to the resolution passed by the SGA Senate in 1977 to name the building after Foy.

David Housel, athletic director emeritus, said Foy represents everything good about Auburn.

He added he imagines the dedication of the union could have been one of the high points of Foy’s life.

Indie film enthusiasts in Columbus open society to students

Throughout the history of films, filmmaking has evolved to encompass an audience who is passionate about retaining its history, as well as supporting innovative concepts.

This audience comprises some of the greatest film societies in the world willing to share encouragement and criticism on a growing film industry— the independent film.

The idea of preserving artistic integrity is not a foreign concept to the Columbus Film Society.

A primary goal of this organization is to emphasize the importance of artistic achievement in filmmaking and to promote the production of independent art.

Chuck Hemard, professor in photography and board member of the Columbus Film Society, believes the film society brings a variety of films to the region.

Hemard also thinks the society provides an impressive alternative to the standard box-office films.

Student traveling road to recovery

Welch

After three weeks in a coma, a month in a minimally conscious state and now seven months of intense physical, occupational and speech therapies, Molly Welch, a senior in journalism, is recovering one day at a time from her brain injury from a car accident on Feb. 9.

Molly’s accident happened on I-85 at exit 57 in Auburn.

“She was one exit away from the University,” said Mary Welch, Molly’s mother.

Molly had been home visiting a friend who had been out of the country, Welch said.

No one is quite sure how Molly’s accident happened, but Welch believes Molly may have been trying to work on an assignment, because her digital recorder was on during the accident.

“She hadn’t been drinking, there were no drugs,” Welch said. “The only thing we can think of is she bent down to get her recorder to listen, and then it was too late to rectify the crash.”

Concert brings Auburn bands, singers together

Musical notes and voices swirled around Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum during the “Sounds of Auburn” concert Nov. 13.

The concert began at 7:30 p.m. and lasted approximately an hour and a half.

Musical groups that performed Thursday night included the Auburn Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Chamber Choir, Gospel Choir, University Singers and Steel Band.

Corey Spurlin, director of the Auburn University Marching Band, said the purpose of the concert is to showcase the music
