University Senate passed a resolution Tuesday stating that a faculty member’s percentage of assigned duties should be a factor in determining merit raises. Tenure evaluation, promotions and post-tenure review are all based on the percentage of assigned duties, so this policy is now consistent with these reviews.

The Senate also reviewed a proposed policy that would establish an ombudsman position to help resolve internal conflicts. The ombudsman would be available to faculty, staff and administrative and professional employees.

A similar resolution was passed more than a year ago and sent to then-president Ed Richardson, but the resolution was never enacted.

Richard Penaskovic, immediate past chair of University Senate, said President Jay Gogue expressed interest in creating this position and requested the resolution be resubmitted.

The policy is expected to come before the Senate for a vote at its next meeting.
