Gov. Bob Riley wrote a letter to the Auburn community last week asking for nominations to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Board of Trustees.
“Choosing trustees to provide oversight for our University is essential to the future of Auburn University,” said Riley in the letter.
Riley hopes to have a nominee confirmed by the state Senate during this Legislative session.
The Legislative session began Feb. 5 and is limited to 30 meeting days within 105 days of the starting date.
During this session, Riley has 21 public university board of trustee slots to fill.
The vacancy within Auburn’s Board of Trustees is the spot formerly belonging to Earlon McWhorter.
McWhorter has been a at-large trustee since being appointed in 2001 by then-Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.
The nominating committee is comprised of Riley, Neil Christopher and Ralph Jordan of the Alumni Board, Board of Trustees President Pro Tempore Paul Spina and a trustee member who is to be determined.
At the April 25 board meeting, Spina will recommend trustee Robert Lowder to fill the open spot on the nominating committee.
“Selecting able, committed trustees to provide institutional oversight is crucial for the future of Auburn University,” said Todd Stacey, deputy press secretary for Riley. “Gov. Riley looks forward to working with the Auburn family to choose the best, most capable person possible to serve on the board.”
