Students avoid potentially dangerous situations by catching a ride on one of Auburn’s late-night shuttles

The Auburn University Night Security Shuttle has become a vital part of Auburn’s night life.

The bright flashing orange light is a welcomed sight to students all over campus, and with an average of up to 200 riders a night, the five security vans stay in constant motion.

The importance of on-campus night transportation has become even more relevant over the past few weeks.

“The shuttle encourages students to be more responsible,” said Tamika, the number five bus driver. “We do not want any students walking alone at night. We are a reliable ride anywhere, anytime on campus.”

The Quad and Hill residence halls, the library, RR parking lot and Ramsey are the stops in high demand.

“Whenever I am at the library really late, I call and they pick me up and take me to my dorm,” said Elizabeth Pressler, a sophomore in science education.

Countless students employ the night shuttle after running errands off campus.

“I almost always call the security shuttle when I am coming back with groceries,” said Christine Rose, a freshman in nutrition and dietetics. “It is so convenient to have the van pick me up at my car; that way, I don’t have to carry all of my bags home.”

Not only do the shuttles provide a safe route around campus, but the drivers offer a friendly environment.

Many students know the names of each of the drivers and some have developed favorites.

“I love Ms. May,” said Micki Brunson, a freshman in elementary education. “We are great friends. She always greets me when I get on and wants to know what I’m up to that night. Before I get off she reminds me to have a great time and be careful. She’s always laughing!”

Many students use the van in hopes to make a fast food stop along their route.

“I wish the Security Shuttle could serve 24 hour food and drink, kind of like pimp my ride Security Shuttle,” said Abby Sherrill, a sophomore in apparel design.

Later in the night, it seems everyone who boards the van is usually hungry and would not mind the occasional halt for a food run.

Unfortunately, the requests must be turned down because of the vans’ strict on-campus limitations.

Tamika offers one rule to all who utilize the shuttle: “Please wait for the bus to stop before you get off. I can’t tell you how many people have trouble getting in and out. Be cautious.”

The Night Security Shuttle Van Service offers a safe ride to or from anywhere on campus seven days a week while classes are in session, except during summer session, home football game evenings and official Auburn University holidays.

Now Tiger Transit is increasing hours of the night shuttle van operation from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m., but it is also increasing the number of running shuttle vans from three to five.
