There are few things more disheartening to college students than the sound of a blaring alarm clock the first day back to classes after spring break.
Unfortunately, Auburn students met that reality this past Monday, an alarm that signals the end of sandy beaches, spending time with family and a week-long break from the books.
So how do students plan on getting back into the grind of studying and waking up early?
For Bradley White, a senior in criminology, it’s all about getting some much needed rest, as well as taking a break from the bars.
“I’m planning on not drinking, studying some and getting some sleep,” White said.
Sleep was also a major factor in returning to a hectic class schedule for Marie Fleming, a sophomore in economics.
“As soon as I got back from the beach Saturday, I passed out for like 12 hours,” Fleming said. “And even then I was still tired on Sunday, so I went to bed early again.
“If I hadn’t slept as much as I did, I doubt I could have ever made it to my 8 a.m. class.”
Some students decided to study while on break.
Ben Lambert, a junior in political science, said he brought some books with him on his trip so he wouldn’t be cramming when he got back.
“I figured I would be laying on the beach a good portion of the time, so I may as well get some reading done so I wouldn’t procrastinate,” Lambert said.
Reading on the beach worked out well for Lambert, but for some students it was too hard to retain anything from studying while hanging out at the beach.
“Whenever I pulled out a book to start reading, I just felt like I wasn’t enjoying my time as much so basically I just gave up.”
Unfortunately sleeping and studying didn’t do much to help students get over the biggest issue of returning from spring break, the longing for the beach as well as family.
Leaving the sunny skies and crashing waves for Haley center desks and textbooks was the hardest part of returning to Auburn for some students.
“The last couple days in Panama City I just wanted to go home,” Lambert said.
“But now that I’m back, I already wish that my classes would get cancelled, and I could be right back on the beach with my friends.”
