BIRMINGHAM — Convicted serial killer Daniel Siebert, 53, died Tuesday from pancreatic cancer while on Alabama’s death row. Siebert was sentenced to death separately for the murders of five people, including the Feb. 19, 1986 murder of his girlfriend Sherri Weathers, 24, and her two sons, ages 4 and 5.
GREENVILLE — Former Gov. Fob James’ son Tim James is planning to run again in 2010 for governor, a position his father held for two terms. Tim James lost the Republican nomination to Gov. Bob Riley in 2002, four years after his father’s second term ended.
BIRMINGHAM — State troopers issued more than 4,000 tickets this weekend in Jefferson and Cullman counties. The tickets were issued during two separate crackdowns on traffic violations. There were 3,534 tickets issued in Cullman County and 560 tickets issued along Interstate 459 in Jefferson County.
LOS ANGELES — The price of a regular gallon of gasoline reached an all-time high Wednesday, at $3.50. The cost is up from Sunday’s $3.49 and is the highest AAA has ever recorded. California has the highest average per gallon at $3.86 a gallon, and Wisconsin has the lowest at $3.39.
NEW YORK — “Harry Potter” series author J.K. Rowling is suing Vander Ark, the author of a long-standing fan Web site. Rowling is suing to stop the publication of Vander Ark’s encyclopedia, “Harry Potter Lexicon.” Rowling said the book would open the doors for anyone to steal an author’s work and present it as their own.
NEW YORK — World Vision, a humanitarian organization, said Tuesday it is unable to feed 1.5 million of the 7.5 million people it fed last year. The organization made a plea for international donors to step in. The cuts could affect donations to 35 of the 100 countries where the agency works.
