Vacations are few and far between for me these days. People asked me what I’m doing for summer vacation and I answered, “Vacation? I don’t get those anymore.”

Beaches? No. Europe? No. Six Flags? Nope.

I have always been one for routines, but this one was making me contemplate dropping out of school. I needed to get away.

Luckily, this past weekend my boyfriend came to the rescue, as he always does, and I got to go with him to Kentucky for his company picnic. It could not have come at a better time.

With exams coming up at the end of this week, a mini getaway and change of scenery was the exact dosage of medicine needed to get me to focus on what I need to do this week to prepare for finals.

Kentucky might not be anyone’s first choice destination for a getaway, but Lexington is nothing to sneeze at. People there are genuinely nice, and the University of Kentucky has a pretty awesome campus and surrounding downtown area.

Before this vacation, I had not been anywhere since last summer, when I had to, once again, squeeze a week’s worth of relaxation and tourism into a single weekend in New York City.

But I guess that is the price many students pay in order to graduate at a decent time. I have consistently taken classes since Fall 2005 and without summer courses, I would be about 2 ½ semesters behind schedule.

So I guess until I receive a degree with my name on it, mini vacations are the way to go. Auburn has me on too tight of a leash to do anything else.

I always have to think about it like this: I’m working hard now, so I can take it easy later.

I don’t always like it, but it is something I have to do if I plan on taking any vacations in the future that last longer than a weekend.
