Lately in the news, and I don't mean the Fox News and CNN floating heads that yammer back and forth about who is bending the truth more, but the people that I trust, we are talking about returning to "responsible" journalism.

Writers like Maureen Dowd, Leonard Pitts and Nobel Prize winning writer Paul Krugman are among the people who say the things we don't want to hear. Because, more often than not, they are saying what is right and we can't stand to be proven wrong.

Journalism ethics is the big discussion floating around in the air. Is journalism ethics an oxymoron? Do journalists have a code of ethics to which they must dutifully adhere to?

Before I give you the answer let's take a look at "journalism."

This past week Fox News had to apologize yet again for their fabrication of news reports.

Publicly, the news channel had to tuck its tail and go to the corner for using old stock footage of Sarah Palin, shot during her vice presidential campaign, and using it while talking about her book signing tour. Check the article for proof, not on Fox, because they ran it for a total of three hours and then I never saw it again.

Knuckleheads like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh everyday spew untrue and malicious propaganda and are then forced to recant it. You would think they just would give up.

Glenn Beck, in the same show, said he wants to return to

the principles of our founding fathers, and then accuses liberals of, "building up this wall of separation between church and state, and it's nonsense!"

I don't know what founding fathers he is referring to.

Another clip of Beck is when he was trashing the families of those lost in the World Trade Center attacks. He starts out saying how at first he didn't hate the families of those lost, but after a year, he loathes them.

"All the 3,000 victims' families, I don't hate all of them, I hate about, probably about ten of them." He then goes on to say, "when I see 9/11 victim family, you know, on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up.' I'm so sick of them. Because they're always complaining. And we did our best for them."

This man wrote a book called "Common Sense". Boy do I hate irony.

To continue down the list, we have Ann Coulter calling John Edwards a "fag" during a lecture she was giving at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Class never finds poor Ann.

I could go on and on with examples and start quoting from Bill O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh and loud, misinformed fools, but it will only serve to sidetrack from what I am getting at here.

What are we doing? I know what they are doing, but the question is do you people know what they are doing? Are you able to see through the curtain and realize the wizard is just a man named Rupert Murdoch?

The fact is, is that these men, and whatever Coulter is, are for show. They are not meant to be taken seriously. They are meant to draw attention to the channel. The more we watch, in order to listen or ridicule, we are giving them ratings and our attention. It's a business and their business is to be seen.

People are always talking about this "liberal media." Where is that channel? What kinds of things are they talking about?

All these channels, MSNBC and CNN that they claim are the "liberal media," are saying the same crap about President Obama as Fox is. Just as equally misinformed at times, but just without the sideshow pundits.

They don't care who you are, it's all about ratings. It's about money. And who do the rich people in this country support? Who is consistently lowering the taxes of the wealthiest people in this country? You can even go so far as to pick a political party/side… I'll wait… If you're still thinking then it's hopeless and this idea is just not for you.

So getting back to the original question.

What is a journalist's code of ethics?

My answer is that it depends on the journalist. He or she creates their own code of ethics that they find appropriate. Good journalists know who the other good journalists are. Apparently though, we are all still debating on who the bad ones are since the field is split concerning Fox News.

Rupert doesn't understand it, but that doesn't mean that hope is lost for you people.

Here is the underlying truth and principle. Whether you are Republican or Democrat, we are all journalists. We should all, "be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information."

Stop being played for a fool by quick catch phrases and word repetition.

Things like, "Obama's War" and "Obama's deficit" have no logic backing them since he didn't start either. Now, whether or not you think he is helping or hurting the problem is a different statement. Be smart and don't mix emotions and fears with logic and knowledge.

Change it instead to, "Bush's miserable mess, masterminded by Dick Cheney and voted on by the cowards in Congress that Obama just can't seem to get anyone to work with him on."

Wow, that was easy, maybe one day I too can work for Fox. As long as I still question Obama's birth certificate I am a shoe-in.

This article is a bunch of garbage just like all the garbage you're accusing others of....where is responsible reporting...definately not in America!

This will be my last posting because my doctor informed me yesterday that I have colon cancer. It will be a long battle (hopefully) and I will fight it with vigor. I have had fun poking fun at you college kids. You are a great bunch, and you arethe future of our country. If you do nothing else in your lives stand up for the Constitution and the American system of government. It has made us the most powerful nation on earth. Despite our muscular status on the world stage, we at the same time have never invaded anyone except in the case of saving those less fortunate. I will concede that the attack on Iraq was a stupid venture, but the ones who started it were filled with misguided information and foolish statistics. I regret this, but concede we all make mistakes. It is far better to err on the side of decency than sit idly by and do nothing. I wish for all of you great success in your future lives and always remember no one, especially big government, can do for you better than yourself. Be kind and loving to your friends and loved ones at all times. Lend a helping hand to those truly in need and fight against those who would make us a beggar society. America does deserve the best out of you, so get on with the task. I have never seen nor do I know any of you but I send to you this morning my love and friendship. God speed to all who read this message and always remember I am not mentally ill.

This is for "loserscomenting" who can't even spell commenting. It's with two Ms you phonically impaired dummy. By the way, I am not a troll. I am 6-2, weigh 200 pounds, am tanned and muscular and fantastically virile for someone 81 years of age. If any girls read this, please respond and I will try to satisfy your needs. Most of these college boys are merely girlie men these days.

While trying to type the previous post and holding my year-old son on my lap feeding him I forgot to identify myself. I am certainly not "anonymous." Please forgive the failure to sign my reply to PSYCHO>
« anonymous wrote on Sunday, Feb 07 at 03:22 PM »
See there PSYCHO just like I told you. I got up early, made my posting, went to church and then spent my noon lunchtime on the phone with my bookie laying down 10 grand on the Colts. Now I can get back to you and your scurrilous assault on my state of mind. My iQ was tested out at 140 when I was shipped out to Air Force pilot school, from which I graduated at the top of my class. I note your baseless allegations of mental illness after noticing that you penned your diatribe at 3 p.m. This time, of course, reinforces my charge of you and the others crawling out after a night of debauchery and other licentious living. Make a course correction else you will spend your remaining days in misery!

This is for LOL. I am a retired college professor, founder of my own business that has done remarkably well, a father, grandfather and great0grandfather who is now blessed with a 36-year-old wife, having outlived two other wives. On weekends in the winter I go snow skiing and my summers are spent mainly at Boca Raton where I enjoy parasailing, but not to the level of my grandchildren. I hope you have a nice day. I believe today's college students spend too much time listening to wild music and drinking cheap beer. That is no way to nourish the intellect. I am glad I found this site. It does provide a useful diversion for me. While I am writing this you probably are sleeping off last night's drunken outing. My critics, by the way, seem to be girlie boys. Are you?

"fuel my lust for verbal combat"

sounds like you need to get off the computer and get laid.

HAHA
« LOL@CE wrote on Saturday, Feb 06 at 12:06 PM »
no, you're just poor, lonely SOB who said he has "35 years experience at a major newspaper" who has now be reduced to fighting college students on a web site

no matter how you frame it Lang, who is the real loser here? It means you are well over 50 and this is what you do on a Friday evening?

Who even needs to "take the field for battle"....how pathetic can you get. Ya you may know bigger words than me, but I also thank god I will never be as lonely and pathetic as you

wow. Never heard someone so proud of how much of a loser they really are.

« CE Lanag wrote on Friday, Feb 05 at 06:59 PM »
Now you fools, you are getting into my game. I enjoy verbal jousting with complete idiots, and those among you who have leaped into the fray are just what I want. I am happiest when I am squared off against incompetents and those common scolds who have attacked me only fuel my lust for verbal combat. Have at it you morons. I have taken the field for battle.

Lang

your comments are obviously simply a personal attack on the writer. You are probably just a student who doesn't like the author or something sad and pathetic like that.

Did you even read the column, or did you stop when he started holding Fox and our media accountable? Did you not do the same thing he was speaking out against? That's what we call proving a point, thanks Lang.

"My answer is that it depends on the journalist. He or she creates their own code of ethics that they find appropriate."

- u missed that day of training Lang, must have been busy writing for 35 years

"Good journalists know who the other good journalists are."

- and now, so do we, we know that CE Lang, real or fake, is a complete dumbass.
« @CE wrote on Friday, Feb 05 at 09:47 AM »
wow Lang

You just proved it all there.

Refusal to answer which paper you worked at. Some 35 years of experience you have.

You're making yourself look foolish.

And how in god's name do you know what my political leanings are? All I asked was what paper you worked at, and you assume I am a "leftist loon"?? Sounds like you are just easily angered when backed into a corner your thesaurus cannot help you escape from.

Again, I will ask the simple question of where you worked as "an editor of a major paper for 35 years". Simple question for a very complex person.

Why are you so embarrassed to name the major paper you worked? Any journalist would be thrilled to list a "major paper" they had worked at. I had a stint at the AJC before I left the newspaper field to work at the Birmingham Magazine office. Less work and more time with my family.

See, that was not hard Lang. And if you are not even from Auburn...what are you doing on this Web site? Do you just patrol college Web sites looking for fights? Someone with "35 years of experience" should have more to do with their life.

It's actually really sad.
« CE Lang wrote on Friday, Feb 05 at 08:17 AM »
Spitzer you are a leftist loon. If you got a journalism degree from Auburn that isn't saying much. You would have achieved more with a degree in milking cows.
« lonely wrote on Thursday, Feb 04 at 08:27 AM »
do you just sit around with a thesaurus?

seriously, how old are you? Cause you're acting like a baby.

Is this really what you want to do with your time? Check back to a college web site to see which college student engaged you in an argument?

By the way, what was the name of your "major paper"? I have worked at five different papers around the south and northeast, and I have never heard of someone with the last name Lang. Almighty editor? Are you afraid to give your real name and paper??

From the sound of your age you would be around my age too.

So let's here where you worked and who you are...

BTW it's online comments. Who has perfect grammar in everything they type? lol

lighten up!

unless you have reached the zenith of your argument here, let's hear some specifics about your experience. Let us deem which paper is major. Sheesh you were a journalist? can't imagine a very good one with an attitude like that.

Why such vitriol unleashed against poor little me? All I have tried to do is enlighten some of you people. I can tell by the language you have used against me that you probably struggled through the lower grades but have reached your zenith in coping with the language. I do feel sorry for idiots like you, who have little hope of succeeding in life because of your lack of a proper vocabulary. I suggest your enrollment in a good truck driving school, or perhaps attending bartender school. That obviously is where your real talents can be expressed.
« seriously???? wrote on Wednesday, Feb 03 at 11:27 PM »
this is a 2 month old column. What are we even talking about it for?
« really CE? wrote on Wednesday, Feb 03 at 11:18 PM »
I think you're just a butt hurt plainsman staff member who likes to talk shit on their failing Web site. No matter if Sims can't spell, your newspaper sucks a huge one.

Everyone on this campus knows it. The only thing I see people doing with your newspaper is letting it sit in the rack. Cause Lindsey Davidson, the "editor", writes columns about her new kitten. Sims is a liberal, bleeding heart douche, screw him. I heard they have a new online editor anyways. I guess Andrew quit.

And you CE, if you're real, you're pathetic excuse for a human being. Mr. Hotshot Editor of a "major paper"....HAHAHAHA you're such a loser it's not even funny. Coming on a college newspaper web site and bragging about how awesome you are??? Please...where are you now? retired? so this is what you do? 35 years? wow that would make you 70 at the youngest....and you're on here....what are you waiting for? die already!

I'm sure you will talk about how to spell shoo in some more. BTW, dumbshit, it's spelled both ways. Freaking moron. Research something before opening your stupid ass mouth

here is search for shoo-in

http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&um=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=shoo-in

here is search for shoe-in

http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&um=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=shoe-in

looks like it doesn't matter all that much.

You're pathetic

Andrew Sims is not only a fool, but he can't handle the English language. And he wants to be a journalist? I was an editor of a major paper for 35 years and I would have thrown him out the door the first day. I won't get into all of his horrendous errors in writing. Let me just refer you to the last word in his epistle. The proper word is "shoo-in," not "shoe-in." Geez, this is one ignorant poor soul. Get thee to a McMillan Handbook of English, you dolt!
