At the Blue Raider Bash, which was held in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the Tigers were defeated early on by Miami (23-25, 20-25, 20-25) and Duke (22-25, 17-25, 23-35) in three straight sets.
However, the mood changed when Auburn fought to defeat Middle Tennessee Saturday night in an intense five-set match (24-26, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 15-10).
“The overall highlight was beating Middle Tennessee because they are a really good team,” said Sarah Bullock, sophomore outside hitter.
While team-bests of seven blocks from senior middle blocker Lauren Mellor and 12 kills from junior outside hitter Kelly Fidero helped lead the Tigers to victory against Middle Tennessee, the team’s passing held them together.
“Our passing was really on its game,” said Katherine Culwell, sophomore outside hitter. “We’ve been working a lot on that.”
Auburn finished the weekend Sunday afternoon with a win against Southern Mississippi in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 26-24).
Other standout performances included 16 digs from libero Liz Crouch against Miami, 22 assists from senior and freshman setters Christina Solverson and Chelsea Wintzinger against Southern Miss and senior middle blocker Alyssa Davis with nine kills and five blocks against Duke.
The Tigers, with a current record of 6-2, will play against Oregon State, College of Charleston and Cincinnati next weekend in the C of C Classic.
