In tough economic times we see the good, the bad and the ugly start to come out of our neighbors and fellow citizens. We only have to look at the news or get on the net to find that some don't react well in times of stress. We've heard far too many stories in the last few months of parents robbing banks with their child in tow or of distraught husbands and fathers killing there entire family because of money problems. Also and most troubling are those who would use the economic conditions as an excuse to take what is not theirs.

I say all this to say that now more than ever is a time to reflect on our safety and those of our loved ones and friends. This is especially true on most campuses around the country. Am I advocating that we arm ourselves? Yes in a manner of speaking, but not with guns. Guns have a tendency to be lethal and although few if any of us would hesitate to use one if our lives or those of a loved one depended on it. Do we really want to live with the fact that we took a human life? Not to mention that it is illegal to carry a firearm in most places and getting to it when faced with an attacker can be challenging.

This is why I advocate the use of non-lethal weapons like pepper sprays, stun guns, tasers, and solid steel batons. These are all non-lethal weapons that will temporarily disable your attacker and allow you to escape and/or go for help. They are also in most cases small and easy to carry. They also add to the element of surprise. This works very well for women whom most attackers think that they can simple overpower. Most people will ask how these items will help me if an attacker approaches me with a gun. The answer is it won't and neither will having a firearm unless you can get it out and shoot your attacker before he shoots you. One of the biggest keys to not being in this situation is to avoid getting into these types of situations. Since most of us don't think it will happen to us, we take unnecessary chances. We go to the ATM at night. We park in dark isolated areas. We don't survey our surroundings when going to our apartment or dorm. We don't think that someone could follow us home from the mall. I'm not saying to become paranoid, just aware of what's going on around you and try and not put yourself in bad situations.  How many times have we been out shopping and are carrying so many bags that we had no free hand to use in case of an attack? On that same subject, all the pepper sprays and stun guns in the world are useless if you have to dig in your purse to try and find it. In other words make sure that you have your pepper spray out, safety off and ready to use it as you're walking to your car, dorm, apartment or home. The two things in life that will most keep you from becoming a victim are preparation and anticipation. Be prepared by having something with you and anticipate by having it out and ready to use.

Fred, you're buffoon to think that anyone who isn't competent enough or willing to carry a gun would be better off with something less-than-lethal. All they're going to do is further aggravate the attacker and then have it used against them. People still need to train with the less-than-lethal device or they'll be in a world of hurt. Selling this crap without offering the appropriate training is just as bad as being the attacker yourself.
