The University announced it would hold a town hall to address concerns regarding sexual violence on campus as the first protest was underway.

Circulating on The Plainsman social media pages recently was an opinion piece from the editorial board addressing the recent abortion legislation in Texas (legislation which I admit has some significant problems). The editorial lamented the Texas decision and concluded with a plea for Alabamians not to allow a similar bill to pass in our state. As a grateful member of the Auburn Family, I’d like to respond, briefly and respectfully, though firmly in opposition to the sentiment expressed in the editorial.

Whether in high school or college, we all can remember when our world changed, seemingly overnight. Over spring break, Auburn students were notified that we would not be returning to campus the following Monday and would instead spend the next four weeks online while the pandemic passed.

This is in response to the Plainsman’s July column titled “Urbanization of Auburn leaving behind some community members.“ As a former resident, I write because I disagree that urbanization (or urbanism, as its advocates prefer) is a bogeyman that implies negatives like “gentrification” — to the contrary, urbanism and its principles offer a path to sustainability and inclusion, and I believe Auburn should embrace them.

In 1920 the United States wrote the “noble experiment” of Prohibition into law. This ban of alcohol aimed to reduce crime and resolve social issues of the time. Proponents of Prohibition concluded that difficulty to access alcohol would reduce the amount consumed. This seems logical, and at first, it seemed successful. However, after an initial decline, consumption began to rise steadily. Underground production, speakeasies and organized crime sprung up across the country as acts of rebellion to this ban.

Next Tuesday, April 3 the City Council will vote on extending the building height downtown by Toomer’s Corner to 75’ from the 65’ passed two years ago. The 65’ height was reached by a year-and-a-half Downtown Master Plan (DMP) study by the Planning Commission and a compromise by the Citizens who wanted 60’ building height.

I recently graduated in December from Auburn, a university that I love dearly. We have a beloved tradition at Auburn where following athletic victories the trees are rolled at Toomer’s Corner to signify the win.

Auburn folks believe in honoring the legacy of former Dean of Students James Foy, if response to my blog post on the topic is any indication. Both readership and comments reflected respect and affection for the Auburn icon.

Dear President Leath and Provost Hardgrave,

There is a dream that is at stake of being eliminated in our country. That dream is DACA. 80,000 of the people around us are living in fear of leaving the only place they call home, they are called the DREAMers. It is up to us, citizens with legal documentation, to stand up for these people whose voices aren’t being heard.
