TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have released former Auburn Tiger Frank Thomas. The team said the deal with the 19-year veteran  was “of mutual consent.” Thomas, now a designated hitter, has been slumping lately.

CINCINNATI — Bengals linebacker Odell Turman has been reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Thurman missed the 2006 and 2007 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

BOSTON — Boston College has indefinitely suspended defensive end Brady Smith after he was charged with an on-campus sexual assault and breaking and entering. Smith, who started in 12 games last season, finished with 29 tackles and 2.5 sacks during the team’s 11-3 season.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska fans warmly welcomed new head coach Bo Pelini to the Cornhusker nation in the team’s spring scrimmage with an attendance of 80,149, a new school record. Some tickets for the game were reported as selling for more that $100.

WASHINGTON — Three members of Congress want the Justice Department to investigate whether college football’s Bowl Championship Series is an illegal enterprise.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Arizona State assistant Mark Phelps replaces Keno Davis as Drake’s men’s basketball head coach. Davis recently accepted a job at Providence.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Track and field coach John McDonnell announced Monday he will retire at the end of the season. McDonnell has coached Arkansas to 42 National titles and won more national championships than any other collegiate coach.

INDIANAPOLIS — Colts running back Kenton Keith was arrested Sunday morning for refusing to leave a nightclub parking lot. He was released from jail Monday.

DETROIT — Chris Osgood replaced Dominik Hasek as goaltender for the Red Wings. Osgood came in during game four and will remain in the position during the second round.

REUNION, Fla. — Lorena Ochoa won the Gin Open by three strokes. Ochoa’s victory was her fourth consecutive LPGA win of the season. This is the fifth time in LPGA tour history a player has won four consecutive scheduled tour events.

BOSTON — Dire Tune bested Alevtina Biktimirova by two seconds to win the Boston Marathon in the closest finish in the history of the women’s Boston Marathon Monday. Robert Cheruiyot won the men’s in his fourth victory in the race.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — University of Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton underwent successful anthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and is expected to work out with the team in early June. Crompton is expected to replace departed senior Eric Ainge. Crompton has five career toudowns and four interceptions with the Volunteeers.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. — All criminal charges against former Penn State running back Austin Scott have been dropped. Scott was arrested for sexual assault in 2003.

NEW YORK — Giants quarterback Eli Manning married his college sweetheart Abby McGrew during a sunset ceremony Saturday at the one and only Pamilla Resort on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

Jackson, Miss. — James Green has been hired to coach Jacksonville State’s baseball team. He is leaving Mississippi Valley State after leading the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1996. Green replaces Mike LaPlante, fired after 95-137 in eight seasons at Jacksonville State.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis All-American guard Chris Douglas-Roberts will enter the 2008 NBA draft, joining teammate Derrick Rose as an early entry to the pros.

Lewisburg, Pa. — Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery is retiring after 14 years of coaching the basketball team. He took the Bisons to two NCAA appearances, including an upset of Kansas in 2005.

Palm Harbor, Fla. — Tennessee’s Candace Parker was the first pick in the WNBA draft over LSU’s Sylvia Fowles. Parker beat Fowles’ squad on a last-second basket in the national semifinals in Tampa. The Volunteers are the new defending national champions.
