Tonya Nolen, Title I teacher at Dean Road Elementary School, recently received an award from the Alabama Reading Association honoring her as an outstanding reading teacher. Nolen helps students grades kindergarten through second grade improve their reading skills with 30 minute group sessions.
The City of Auburn and Auburn City Schools have both recently been ranked in two different listings.
The City Council discussed tax abatements to be extended and amended on Auburn Technology Park North. According to City Manager Charlie Duggan, the plant which is made up of businesses and factories is investing $20,000,000 in an expansion of the plant.
Pieology Pizzeria recently opened its doors on Toomer's Corner. Located in the building formerly occupied by The Bank Vault, the new restaurant is predicted to bring in plenty of business to downtown Auburn. Shift leader Jordan Stephney said the chain chose Auburn because of the growing population. "We want to put Pieology where people will definitely eat it," said Stephney. "And we know they're going to eat it here." Stephney said the chain chose Toomer's Corner specifically because of the history.
During the week of finals Auburn's on-campus library, Ralph Brown Draughon Library, is usually pretty crowded.
Many residents of Timberwood subdivision came before the City Council on Nov. 17 to discuss their concerns about a new Dollar General being built at the intersection of Timberwood Drive and Highway 29. Shauna Monroe spoke to the council first, saying that the community had no warning as to what was coming. "We feel that we were blindsided by this," said Monroe.
Dr. Thad Moore thought the area could use a veterinary practice with a homier feel. To reach this goal, he decided there was no better way than to open up one of his own practices in the comfort of an actual home.
Because of decades of visitors, both pedestrians and automobiles, Toomer's Corner started to display some issues that needed to be fixed. Buildings and signs were covered, tree canopies were too low, stop bars were too far back, and shrubs and ground plain were overgrown.
The Auburn City council voted on Tuesday night to take action against two businesses, Tiger Lodge and former business currently occupied by Pita Pit, for failure to pay taxes and penalties.
