Vets Visit WWII Memorial

Friday was a day of gratitude and appreciation nearly 65 years in the making.Eighty-seven World War II veterans from Columbus and the surrounding areas were honored for their service with an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C.

Solar researcher becomes fourth COSAM faculty member to receive prestigious $580,000 grant

An electrochemist and assistant professor in the Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics since the fall of 2006, recently received one of the most prestigious grants given to young professors.Wei Zhan is the recipient of a five-year, $580,000 grant awarded by the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development, or CAREER. Zhan said he feels fortunate and lucky to have received the grant.

Club Tennis Closes Year at Championships

Eleven members of the Auburn Club Tennis team represented Auburn at the recent U.S. Tennis Association National Campus Championship in Surprise, Ariz.The event, which took place April 15-17, was hosted at the Surprise Racket and Tennis Club by United States Tennis Association, NCCS, Intercollegiate Tennis Association and World Team Tennis.Sixty-four club teams from across the country competed after qualifying at their respective regional levels.

Men's golf struggles to compete without Stembridge

The Auburn Men's Golf team traveled to Laredo, Texas, to participate in the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club.The event, hosted by the University of Houston, was held March 5-6.Auburn was hoping for a clean tournament and strong finish for its first appearance in the three round, 54-hole tournament.Friday, however, sophomore John Stembridge fell ill and was pulled from the tournament, leaving the Tigers down a man for the first two rounds.Redshirt freshman Jackson Beindorf was flown in for the third round Saturday."It sucked," said sophomore Will McCurdy.

Advertised health food actually poses health risk

With swimsuit season lurking, many people are hitting the gyms and beginning to watch what they eat.Fast food hamburgers start getting replaced with decadent salads and personal Papa John's pizza for lunch is swapped out for a smoothie.However, what most people may not realize is that the healthy choices they think they are making are not always the healthier option."If you just get a plain hamburger from McDonald's that is only 250 calories as compared to some other menu items that people may think are healthier but really aren't," said Elizabeth Purinai, junior in nutrition and food science.According to mcdonalds.com, even its quarter pounder hamburger has less calories and grams of fat than its premium Caesar salad with grilled chicken and Caesar dressing.Purinai said she was not surprised and that sauces and dressings are what really add up."Aim for oil-based dressings if you are going to get a salad," Purinai said.

Locals gorge hotdogs for fire victims

Scarfing down hot dogs was the theme of Friday's fundraiser to benefit an Auburn resident whose home recently burned.Eleven days after Auburn resident Annetta Sparks' home in Gentilly Park burned, the students, faculty and family members of the College of Veterinary Medicine came together to raise money for Sparks.However, the means by which the school chose to raise money, was anything but conventional.The fundraiser, thrown together last minute in honor of Sparks, was the Second Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest."The reason for this contest is strictly for Ms. Annetta Sparks who lost everything when her trailer burned up and three of her four dogs died," said Dougie Macintire, emcee of the event.

Love Your Heart Run Promotes Health and Raises Money

On Saturday, Feb. 6, runners, bikers and supporters packed Chewacla State Park for the 21st annual Love Your Heart Run.As of Friday afternoon, 335 people registered to partake in the event which benefits Lee County's special needs programs. Between 100 and 175 more people registered the day of the event.
