Auburn Art invites the Auburn community to participate in "Preserve the Present," a time capsule being buried on July 17. Auburn Art is a gift shop in downtown Auburn and it has joined with the City of Auburn for a project like none other done in downtown Auburn.
Two Auburn graduates started "Move Auburn," while in school, and have Auburn to thank for it. Whit Mitchell and Will Forbes were just sophomores at Auburn when the idea of Move Auburn started to take shape. Mitchell, a co-owner of Move Auburn, said he recalls noticing all of the sweaty and unhappy dads moving their child in during his freshman year, but it wasn't until his sophomore year that he thought of the idea to do something about it. "I knew some sorority girls that needed help with moving, and I had some guys that could do it," Mitchell said. "About 30 or 40 parents got in touch with us after that saying that they needed help.
Auburn Youth Programs hosted a new culinary camp, as well as many other camps. Ken Porter, Camp Manager of the Auburn Youth Programs, started out as a camp counselor in 2010.
Sarah Jones, an auburn graduate of 2007, started a business last summer called The Introverted Alpha.
Within the first five minutes of the movie "Jurassic World," one sees Daniel Bradley, a graduate from Auburn.
Many have seen the construction going on around the Haley Center and wondered what for. The construction is for the 5th-9th floors of the tower. Joe Ruscin, campus architect, said they are redoing the windows for the 5-9th floors. "We are redoing the caulking around the windows and resealing the glass in the frames, so that we can prevent window leaks that have been occurring," Ruscin said. Martha Koontz, the communications specialist with facilities management, said this will improve the Haley Center. "A few windows had leaks, and we don't want them doing any damage," Koontz said.
Music festivals are a popular activity each summer. It is only June and already Auburn students have been busy attending the different festivals going on. Shaky Boots Country Music Festival, one of the first this summer, took place on the Kennnesaw State University campus May 16-17. Bands such as Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry, Eli Young Band, Jana Kramer and many more smaller bands and artists were in attendance.
Megan Dixon Smalley, former Auburn cheerleader and alumni, said she always wanted an online print shop, but had no idea what it would look like. During Smalley's time as a cheerleader, she started taking pictures and learning about graphic design, along with her public relations major. Smalley launched her company, Scarlet & Gold, on Sept. 1, 2013.
Ash Parsons, former Auburn media studies professor, published her first novel "Still Waters" April 21.
Lauren Howard, Auburn art instructor, held an opening reception for her solo art exhibition Friday, May 22, at Fieldwork Projects from 5-7 p.m.
