Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., his wife Annette Shelby, Auburn University President Jay Gogue, Board of Trustee Member Samuel Ginn and Dean of College of Engineering Larry Benefield spoke at the dedication ceremony for the Shelby Center for Engineering Technology Friday, April 18.

“Congratulations to Auburn,” Shelby said. “This is a great day for Auburn.”

Students have a say in center for recreation

Dean of Students Johnny Green, along with the Student Government Association, sent a survey out to all students April 14 to give them an opportunity to voice their opinions about a new student recreation center.

SGA President Lauren Hayes said SGA is eager to begin working on plans for the new center.

SGA gives to War on Hunger

The Student Government Association passed a resolution last semester to donate 19 cents per Auburn student to the Auburn University War on Hunger.

SGA will make the donation on an annual basis. This year’s total donation is $4,586 based on this year’s enrollment.

SGA chose 19 cents per student for two reasons. First, the World Food Programme, the largest humanitarian organization in the world, has historically fed a school child in the developing world for an average of 19 cents per day.

This building, built in 1962 and named after a former Auburn president, is one of most heavily trafficked areas of campus.

Especially this time of year, students flock to the confines of its walls.

Department of Music and AU Band hosts festival

The Department of Music and the Auburn University Bands hosted the 2008 All-State Band Festival for the top junior and high school students in Alabama last weekend.

The Alabama Bandmasters Association sponsored the three-day event that began Friday night with a performance from the Auburn University Symphonic Band.

The free concert was performed for the participants in the festival, as well as the public at the Opelika Performing Arts Center.

Mock trial competition team prepares for scrimmage

Students assume roles of attorneys and witnesses presenting a case at mock trial Tuesday, April 29.

The Auburn University Mock Trial Competition Team will have a scrimmage civil case Tuesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. in Foy 208.

Brent Traylor, president of the Auburn University Mock Trail Competition and junior finance major, said starting in the fall, the American Mock Trial Association gives the team a packet.

All the teams are given the same packet, and they alternate between civil and criminal cases.

Student-produced ‘Spring Awakening’ has final performance tonight

A student-produced production of Frank Wedekind’s “Spring Awakening” will have its last performance tonight.

The production is directed by Jon-Mark Ponder, a senior in theatre.

The original script was written more than 100 years ago and follows a group of teenagers as they grow up in a repressive society in a small town in Germany.

However, Ponder updated the script and set the play in America in the 1980s.

OIT restricts printing privileges

Any hold on an Auburn student’s Bursar account will prevent on-campus printers from printing or copying.

“The collections department in the Bursar office rolled over a lot of student accounts.” said Office of Information Technology employee and Auburn English graduate student Elizabeth Weeks. “About 4,000 students now have holds on their accounts, which means if you come to the library and try to print you’ll not be able to.”

Many students have been recently added to the delinquent list, but will not know the hold exists until he or she attempts to use on-campus printers or copiers.

Since the switch from the old Banner system is complete in the OIT and Student Financial Services departments, now both programs are synchronized to detect holds and reject students’ printing requests.

“Now the implementation of AU Access is complete on both accounts, students feel the effects,” said Kim Ailiss from Student Financial Services.

“It’s always been that way, but during the recent conversion from the banner system in OIT and our department, there were a few months where students could print, but holds have always prevented printing.”

Auburn professor makes run for Olympic gold

May

The Boston Athletic Association hosted the 2008 Olympic team trials women’s marathon last Sunday, where assistant professor Heather May competed and finished a strong 65th out of 160 runners.

May, an assistant professor in the Department of Theatre, also ran the Chicago Marathon in 2006.

Beating the qualifying standard of 2:47:00 in the race with a 2:45:52 performance, May was able to compete in Boston’s Olympic qualifying event.
