Outsourcing affecting my future career

Friends of mine are completing their required internships this summer and Facebook Chat has allowed us all to keep up with each other.

One chat conversation with a friend who is interning in copy editing, has shaken my confidence with obtaining a job when I graduate.

Although I do not plan to work as a copy editor, the news that the Orange County Reporter has recently decided to outsource its copy editing to an India based company makes me wonder if reporters will be next.

Staff Opinion: Customer service not much of a service

I believe everyone should have to work in the food service industry or hold a customer service position at some point in his or her life.

Whether that means he or she will work as a waiter or waitress or cashier is up to each individual person. I have worked in both, and neither are fun.

I made that point to make this one: if you work in a said establishment, you have to be there, so at least do it with dignity.

It all boils down to respecting your workplace and yourself enough to represent both well.

Staff Opinion: Waiting in line for life's experiences

Standing in line has long been an art form few could improve upon.

Although in ‘Michael,’ John Travolta’s title character claimed to have invented them, lines have been around for as long as there has been something for which to wait.

I had a lot of time to think about the art of lines and how they affect my daily life while at Six Flags this weekend.

While my friends and I stood in line in the sweltering sun for an hour and a half to ride a two minute ride, I contemplated the sanity of all involved.

Staff Opinion: Mandatory abroad programs beneficial

I want to be the person who can say she’s been to every country in the world. I want to have visited at least 10 different countries by the time I’m 30, and that’s only 10 years away.

By the way, I haven’t yet left the country in all my 20 years.

While I haven’t allowed room in my aspirations for the possibility that my responsibilities may prevent any future plans, I have picked a job that has the possibility of travel and the guarantee of spontaneity.

Staff Opinion: What happened to the memorial part?

The best part of last weekend was the shopping. There were sales galore.

50 percent off here, 35 percent off there and for a college student, summer discounts are like early Christmas presents.

I, like every good consumer, did my part to help the economy by splurging on shorts and tanks. Amid all the shopping bags and receipts, and while the buyer’s remorse set in, I wondered if anyone was taking the time to focus on the holiday exploited by commercial marketing.

Students saving Chewacla

Auburn students launch campaign to save local park

Frances Gunnells: freshman in pre-graphic design, hands out information about the preservation of Shell Toomer Parkway on the Concourse Wednesday afternoon. Kendra Carter / NEWS EDITOR

Art class projects. T-shirts. Chewacla State Park. What do all of these things have in common?

The students in two of Debora Myles’ art classes have taken up the issue of the preservation of Shell Toomer Parkway for their final projects in the classes.

“It was all really their idea,” Myles said.

Myles asks her classes to complete a protest piece before the end of the semester. She said the students asked if they had to do it on the war or some other obviously controversial topic so she began to tell them about something in which she was involved.

“I wanted to do a topic that was more locally based so it would have more of an impact,” said Katie Gonzalez, a sophomore in pre-graphic design. After the students heard about the interest of construction on Shell Toomer Parkway and the possible effect it would have on Chewacla State Park, it became a group effort.

Destination: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Kuwait, Persian Gulf

They take classes, play sports and watch TV; they also fly planes and fire weapons. The men and women of the Auburn Reserve Officers’ Training Corps are no different than any other college student, except they are not only earning a degree but also training to serve their country.

N*GGER WETB*CK CH*NK

N*gger, wetb*ck, ch*nk.

These are three words of meaning and 18 letters of hatred.

Sticking to rules not a favorite of mine

Self-control.

Everybody knows what it is, but nobody can master it.

I’ve been thinking the past few weeks quite a bit about that concept, and for all that time I haven’t come up with one great way to apply it to my life.

AU first lady Susie Gogue reacquaints with campus community

As Auburn embarks on another fall semester and old and new students begin pouring into the Plains, there will be two more new distinct faces on campus. These two people are a brand new addition to the administration of the school, but not to the University itself.
