All semester I’ve had a countdown until Dec. 17. That will be the day I walk across the stage, get my diploma, say goodbye to Auburn and begin my life in the real world. 

Up until a few days ago, I’ve been anxiously anticipating that day. But the closer it gets, the more I’m actually dreading it. 

Guys and gals, put your toys away. Alabama law now officially bans the distribution of sex toys.

This follows the Oct. 1 decision of the United States Supreme Court declining to hear a case involving the law.

Here it is: Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s not something I particularly look forward to every year, but, nevertheless, it’s here. I wish we didn’t have to have such a month. I wish breast cancer, and every other kind of cancer, didn’t even exist. But, since they do, the next best option is to embrace this month and the chance to raise awareness about breast cancer. 

Breast cancer is one of the leading expenses on campus. 

Of 2,647 eligible employees for breast cancer screenings, last year only 1,077 got mammograms, which is only 44 percent participation.

Juanita Syljuberget, contracts and grants administrator in the Office of Sponsored Programs, was diagnosed with breast cancer this year at  age 48.

In January, Syljuberget went in for her annual mammogram. The doctors told her to come back in for more tests. When she went in, the doctors did an ultrasound and a biopsy, and they found the cancer.

Dennis Weatherby, founder of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s Minority Engineering Program, died Saturday at the age of 47.

For many college students, a typical job might involve serving food at a restaurant or folding clothes at a retail store. For others, the only job they might have is to be a student.
But, Everett Duke, a sophomore in  business administration, has a job unlike most.
Duke is Boomer, the mascot of the Columbus Cottonmouths professional hockey team.

Auburn University’s enrollment has reached an all-time high this year with 24,137 students. This year’s freshmen class also has the highest average ACT score of any class at Auburn.

Auburn  University’s Committee of 19 had a retreat Sunday to plan events for the upcoming year.

“There’s a couple of big events we have coming up,” said Whitney Skinner, chair of the Committee of 19.

The Committee of 19 works with the World Food Programme to raise awareness about the War on Hunger.

The committee’s first event for the year will be the E.T. York Lecture at 7 p.m.  Thursday, Sept. 21. The lecture will feature James T. Morris, executive director of the World Food Programme.
