Alabama received federal approval for a $13.5 million homeland security grant in response to its advanced communications plan for first responders.
Alabama is one of 20 states to receive approval for a communications plan.
“We are very proud of that,” said Charles Murphy, the assistant director of interoperable communications for the Alabama Department of Homeland Security.

There will be an opportunity for students to help the community by painting a mural on the Bike Shop wall Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The event to paint the mural on the Bike Shop wall on the side facing the BCM is sponsored by the group Make Your Mark.
Make Your Mark is a group of people who use their artistic talent and passion to serve the community.
The idea to paint the mural came from Callie Cooper, a senior in exercise science.
“I wanted to do something to motivate people that are really talented with art and passionate about it,” Cooper said. “I hope it will unite people from all faiths, all races and all walks of life and show people that there is plenty of common ground to come together.”
She began working on the idea and searching for a wall after Christmas break. Julie McGowin offered Cooper the use of the Bike Shop wall at a meeting both were attending.
“It worked out really well, and the pieces just fell into place,” McGowin said.
McGowin had looked into having a mural placed on the wall a few years earlier, but it cost too much at the time. The mural will help enhance downtown Auburn.
A bill, proposed in the House of Representatives by Demetrius Newton, D-Jefferson, and in the Senate by Ted Little, D-Lee, Russell and Tallapoosa, could lead to a convention to reform Alabama’s Constitution.
The constitution, which contains 799 amendments, has governed Alabama since 1901, and it’s the longest constitution in the United States.
The Lee County Red Cross is in the midst of several important projects and provides services throughout the county.
“We’re in the midst of Heroes for Red Cross and would like to share this with the University in a meaningful way,” said Leigh Warren from the Lee County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Heroes for the Red Cross is a fundraiser where individuals pledge to raise a minimum of $1,000 through friends, family or events that they organize.
Auburn will host its first Boshell Diabetes Research Day tomorrow, March 14 at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center.
Several prominent diabetes researchers from across the nation and from universities such as Vanderbilt, University of Georgia and University of Alabama at Birmingham will attend, along with 20 researchers from Auburn.
Hunter Nichols, a senior in geography with a minor in art, was one of 10 students selected to receive a scholarship to attend the North American Nature Photography Association’s 14th Annual Summit in Destin, Fla., Feb. 27 to March 2.
Twelve students, ten from the United States and two from Mexico, attended the summit.
Students submitted an application, with two resources and samples of their photography, for scholarship consideration.

The weather held out last weekend as the Auburn University Women’s Equestrian team triumphed over Baylor University 10-7 Saturday and Oklahoma State University, who arrived undefeated, 10-9 Sunday.
“We had strong competition, which is very exciting,” said senior Coburn Park, who competed in hunt seat on the flat. “We rode really strong.”
