The College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn is currently playing host to a two-month-old zebra.

Tuesday morning last week, the zebra was found grazing off of highway 75 south of Atlanta. Authorities were unsure of where the animal came from, why it was there, or how long it had been grazing near exit 201.

Lt. Matt Garrison of the Butts County Sheriff’s Office was tending to a broken down vehicle on the highway and notified Noah’s Ark, an exotic animal rescue center located in Locust Grove, Ga., of the odd find.

With further inspection, the staff at Noah’s Ark found that Evidence, a name that stuck with the zebra after being referred to several times by the authorities as evidence, was injured.

Noah’s Ark contacted Auburn University’s School of Veterinary Science and made arrangements to have the animal transported and treated by Auburn’s veterinary team.

Museum welcomes performance by guitarist

JD Schein / ASSISTANT PHOTO EDITOR

Saturday night, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art hosted a guitar concert by Gaëlle Solal.

The artist began the concert with a 19th century piece by an Italian composer and played a series of pieces by French and Spanish composers throughout the concert.

The concert was co-sponsored by the Jule Collins Smith Museum and the Chattahoochee Valley Guitar Society.

Andrew Zohn, associate professor of guitar at Columbus State University as well as a member of the CVGS, explained that organizations like the guitar society are non-profit across the country and their goal is to spread their interest to the general population.

Gaëlle Solal, originally from Marseilles, France, began playing the guitar when she was six years old.

She has won several national competitions including second place at the 2006 Guitar Foundation of America’s competitive event.

“(This event is) the most prestigious competition in the United States for guitar,” Zohn said.

He further explained this is where he first met and began working with Solal.

‘Drunkorexia’ eating disorder comes to a university near you

Red Cup Diet: Pete Riley / PHOTO EDITOR

All over the United States, college students face several behavioral problems including eating disorders and alcohol or substance abuse. Imagine the effects of combining two such problems to make a sort of super-disorder.

One product of such a combination is a growing phenomenon socially nicknamed “drunkorexia.”

According to the report “Starving Themselves, Cocktail in Hand” by Sarah Kershaw of The New York Times, “drunkorexia” involves “self-imposed starvation or binging and purging, combined with alcohol abuse.”

Kershaw explains drunkorexics tend to be “college-age binge drinkers, typically women, who starve all day to offset the calories in the alcohol they consume.” Another phenomenon related to “drunkorexia” involves bulimia and alcohol abuse where the alcohol is used as a means for a bulimic to purge themselves of any food or liquid consumption.

Ann Marie DelSignore, a senior staff clinician in Auburn’s Student Counseling Services, made it clear that “drunkorexia” is not a term used by health care professionals and that there is no set criteria for assessing such a disorder.

Rejected Auburn applicants now given alternative

Admissions to Auburn are becoming increasingly competitive, and this year’s applicant pool is one of the largest groups the University has ever seen.

Auburn has only a limited number of freshman spots, and a large number of students are applying. So the University has had to think of other ways to accommodate those it is unable to accept, but would not normally reject.

The newest answer to this growing problem is “The Auburn Guarantee: Seamless Admission” program.
