For those students who would like to get involved in sports, Auburn also has fall and spring intramural and club teams. This is a great way to get some friends together and create a team or to join a team and meet new people.
The Student Act has a number of courts for students to play tennis and racquetball. There are 17 lighted tennis courts and 10 racquetball courts.
The biggest buzz this fall is the exciting new fitness room located upstairs in room 205. It will offer 22 new pieces including 15 new elliptical trainers, two treadmills, two upright bikes, and two recumbent bikes.
This will give a total of 58 pieces including the old fitness room. Also, the downstairs fitness room (old room) is closed from 8:45 a.m.-10 a.m. and the new room is open at that time.
“I am excited for the students. It will alleviate wait time and it has state of the art equipment,” Jennifer Jarvis, director of recreational services, said.
Also, the Student Act has a new weight room facility also located upstairs to be used by students with student trainers. There will be 15 pieces of equipment plus kettle bells, medicine balls and stability balls. The weight room, however, is not open to everyone like the downstairs room is. There are no additional fees for the personal training.
“Last year there were 1,100 personal training sessions,” Bill Jackson, director lifetime wellness fitness, said.
To get started with these training sessions and to schedule a time to meet with a trainer, contact Bill Jackson at 844-3212 or e-mail at jackswi@auburn.edu.
“I can’t guarantee one on one personal training or three days a week, but we will do what we can,” Jackson said.
The Student Act also offers club and intramural sports. Both of these are a great way to get exercise and meet new people or play with old friends.
“Last year there were 270 flag football teams,” Ted Trupp, director of Intramural Sports, said.
Intramural teams are offered in the fall and spring semester and both have first and second season.
The first season includes men’s and women’s badminton, flag football and track and field entries open Aug. 16 and the deadline is Aug. 20 at 6 p.m.
Men’s and women’s soccer, table tennis and volleyball entries open on Oct. 1 and the entry deadline is Oct. 3 at 9 p.m.
Co-rec sports flag football and volleyball also have the same deadline. If students are interested in officiating, they can contact Ted Trupp at truppth@auburn.edu or call at 844-4716.
“Students can officiate and get paid $6 per game,” Trupp said.
Club sports are also offered to students to compete on a collegiate level with other SEC schools, but are not considered a varsity sport. Club sports range from badminton, to lacrosse, to water polo and wrestling. To contact the faculty advisor or president or to get a copy of all club sports offered, contact Dianne Harper at harpede@auburn.edu or at 844-4716.
“Men’s soccer generally hold tryouts because they have a limit on the roster,” Dianne Harper, club sports coordinator, said.
The University has made available some exciting new equipment and ways to help students keep in shape. All should take advantage of these great opportunities.
