For some of you, this is your first semester at Auburn. For many of you, it will be your last semester or your last year.
Last week, I attended an event with a whole host of Auburn faculty, alumni and trustees. It was an odd feeling to see so many people tied so closely to Auburn in one place at the same time.
It was also nice to see. It reminded me just how special this Auburn family truly is. I hope you understand how lucky and privileged you are to be a student here.
We laugh at football games when the “War Eagle Moments” ad comes on, but it’s true. You can go anywhere in the world and say “War Eagle” to someone with an Auburn connection and they will smile joyously and respond in the same fashion.
I love the entire SEC (except maybe Bama), but you don’t get the Auburn camaraderie at any other school. It’s simply not the same.
In every place I’ve visited and worn orange and blue, I’ve gotten a “War Eagle.”
New York City, Cancun, Washington D.C. and everywhere else.
This summer while at Dollywood with my nephew, a guy shouted across the gift shop, “War D-d-d-d-d ... Eagle.” He saw my “five and counting” shirt and yelled across the room. In mid-sentence, he realized there were children around and left out that infamous middle word.
My mother just looked at me and laughed. She’s a Tennessee fan, and they just don’t have what we have.
So wear your orange and blue with pride, but always remember, you represent this institution in those colors. Represent us well in all you do.
This truly is a family, and I’m proud to be a part of it.
With so many changes going on at Auburn, take a look around and realize this is home.
Many of us are away from home, but isn’t home where the heart is? A big chunk of my heart belongs to Auburn. It always will. Here’s to a great semester, season and year.
War Eagle!
