Another fall semester has begun. Here at Auburn, that means Welcome Back Week is in full swing with loads of activities and events for all students to enjoy and start the semester off on a high note.

Many events have been planned months in advance for students to partake in.

Organizations like the University Program Council and Student Government Association are hosting some of these to get students hyped up about a new year here in Auburn.

Students had the opportunity to get a head start on the fun last night when UPC hosted one of its many movie nights, complete with free food provided by The Barbecue House.

“Ironman” was shown and served as something to do for those who had nothing to do the night before fall classes started.

Tomorrow, Aug. 19, a pep rally will be held in the Lower Quad, put on by the SGA.

“That is one of the major events we are coordinating,” said Lauren Hayes, SGA president. “We usually gear events like this towards freshmen, but this year, we have set it up so all students will enjoy it. All activities are designed to get students involved and excited about the new year.”
SGA will also be helping out with each of the colleges.

Different organizations within each college will be represented throughout the week, hosting different events and handing out free giveaways to students who attend.

To name a few, the College of Human Sciences will sponsor a booth for Auburn Abroad in Italy, located in Spindle Hall. Officers will answer questions about the abroad program and will hand out Italian ice.

The College of Liberal Arts will have a CLA Social in the basement of Foy Union where they will hand out cups of lemonade to students and give them information about organizations and upcoming events.

The College of Business will host three different events, one of which being the College of Business BBQ Meet and Greet where students can meet with faculty and chow down on free barbecue from Byron’s.

Emily Smith, the director of Schools Council, said one of the SGA’s main goals for this Welcome Week is to make all students aware of opportunities.

“We wanted to inform students with information on specific colleges,” Smith said. “Our goal is to help students have awareness with each college. Everyone has the chance to get involved, and they don’t have to enter their school year with blinders on.”

For students interested in student government, the first Tiger Tuesday orientation sessions will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 8 p.m. in the new Student Center.

UPC will host its annual Block Party, Thursday, Aug. 21, on Cater Lawn from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

In addition to free food, inflatables and an appearance from Aubie and the AU Rhythm dance team, this event will also feature Hightide Blues.

“It’s basically our membership drive, and the Freshman Year Experience office will be out there with camp counselors, so the freshmen can come see their camp counselors from the summer,” said Emily Dorman, president of UPC. “I think the block party is really well received just because the new students are looking for something to do. It’s the first week of school, so not a lot of people have homework yet.”

A week jam-packed with fun activities, free food and a lot of new information about opportunities at Auburn promises not to disappoint.
