The Opelika Police Department reported a missing person and is requesting the public’s help in finding them. Opelika resident Louis Carter Young Jr. was last seen on March 8 near his residence in the 1100 Block of Magnolia Street.

Gov. Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency for Alabama due to severe weather that may cause flooding, strong winds, hail and tornadoes. The state of emergency goes into effect at 6 p.m. March 16.

On March 4, Gov. Kay Ivey extended the statewide health order with some modifications through April 9. The mask mandate will stay in effect, but Ivey said it will be removed after April 9.

U.S. Marshals arrested John Robert Thomas III at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 in Mildale, Connecticut, according to an Opelika Police Department press release. Thomas was identified as the suspect in a shooting that took place at the 300 Block of South Third Street in Opelika on Feb. 19.

At 3:50 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Opelika Police Department engaged in a high-speed pursuit that began in Auburn. The pursuit continued northbound along Interstate 85, ending in Chambers County.

In response to the proposed granite quarry in Beulah, the Lee County Commission unanimously voted to allow zoning of the affected area. Residents of Lee County’s Beat 13 will have the opportunity to vote on adding zoning on May 18.

When he was hired by the City of Auburn, Jim Buston planned to stay for only three years. 25 years later, he has set his last day for Jan. 31. Buston was hired as the Director of Information Technology in 1996, later becoming the Chief Information Officer, Assistant City Manager and ended as City Manager.

During Tuesday night's City Council meeting, the Council voted to approve an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to install a traffic light at the intersection of Highway 14 and Solamere Lane. ALDOT will have the decision to install the signal, after which the City would agree to maintain it, said City Manager Jim Buston.

During Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, the Council discussed approving annexation and rezoning of a property at the eastern terminus of Sutherland Lane, west of North Donahue Drive. The proposed housing will connect to Sutherland Lane, with no connections to North Donahue Drive yet planned.
