Senior diver Fraser McKean received the Male Diver of the Year Award, the Southeastern Conference office announced Tuesday, April 14. The recognition came after his series of finishes in the 2015 SEC Championships, which included a first-place finish on the platform, and the NCAA Championships, where he took fifth in the platform and sixth overall on the 3-meter springboard.
Six former Auburn swimmers and program coaches were inducted into the Auburn Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame as the Class of 2015 on Saturday, April 11, at Auburn Arena. Former coach David Marsh, who led the Tigers from 1990-2007, guided Auburn to 12 NCAA Championships and 17 SEC titles. Auburn’s top Olympic performer of all-time, Kirsty Coventry, and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Eric Shanteau were honored.
Auburn junior swimmer Annie Lazor was honored with a spot on the USA Swimming roster for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, Wednesday, April 1. The junior will compete in the 100m and 200m breaststroke for the USA team in the third-largest international multi-sport event in the world on July 14-18. Lazor is coming off strong swims in the 2015 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships where she and five other Tigers earned All-America honors. Touching in at 2:08.41 in the 200-yard breaststroke in the consolation final was the second-best swim in school history and a only .18 seconds shy of the school record.
Auburn finished eighth after the first day of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, Thursday, March 26. The Tigers finished the first day of finals with 67 points after scoring performances in two relays and a big finish from Kyle Darmody in the 50 freestyle. Arthur Mendes, Jacob Molacek, Michael Duderstadt and Darmody clocked in at 1:16.04 to take third overall in the 200 freestyle relay, and Auburn picked up a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Joe Patching, Duderstadt, Hugo Morris and Darmody touched in at 3:05.38. Darmody placed 10th overall in the 50 freestyle race.
Women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up the NCAA Championships Saturday, March 21, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Auburn’s 200-yard freestyle relay team opened the final sessions of the tournament with a sixth-place overall finish in day one.
Twelve athletes (10 swimmers and two divers) punched their ticket to compete in the 2015 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships March 26-28 in Iowa City, Iowa. The swimmers who earned a place in the competition are senior Alex Hancock, junior Arthur Mendes, sophomores Kyle Darmody, Michael Duderstadt and Joe Patching and freshmen Peter Holoda, Jacob Molacek, Hugo Morris and Zack Warner. Senior Fraser McKean will lead the divers and compete on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform for the second straight year after his performances at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships March 9-11.
Senior Fraser McKean and junior Justin Youtsey qualified to compete on the 1-meter springboard at the 2015 NCAA Men’s Championships Monday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. McKean finished fifth overall and had a 12-dive list of 719.85 to earn his spot at the national meet. Youtsey took seventh overall with a score of 674.35 to represent Auburn for the first time at the national meet on the 1-meter springboard. The two of them have a chance to qualify for the championships with a top-12 finish in the 3-meter springboard Tuesday and the tower Wednesday. The NCAA Championships will be March 26-28, in Iowa City, Iowa.
