A 29-year-old male from Auburn is in custody after the Toomer's fire, according to the Auburn Police Division.
The suspect, who is not affiliated with Auburn University, was also charged with public intoxication.
He was transported to the Lee County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $500 bond. University officials are evaluating the damage to the Toomer Oak tree and the case remains under investigation by Auburn Police. Additional charges are anticipated.
Witnesses at Toomer’s Corner identified the suspect, who was immediately detained and taken into custody.
