Police tape on North Gay Street in Auburn, Ala., on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016.

Two Montgomery men, Joseph L. Smith, 39, and Alton L. Surles, 44, were arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree burglary and first-degree theft of property by Auburn police on Tuesday, according to a release from the Auburn Police Division.

On Friday, a business located on Cox Road was burglarized. Over $3,000 worth of property was stolen in that incident.

Officers responded to another incident on Monday at a convenience store on West Longleaf Drive. An employee of the store told police that two men entered, jumped across the counter, demanded she open the cash register and stole money and other merchandise from the shop.

Police said surveillance footage from both businesses led them to determine the two incidents were related.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, an Auburn police officer pulled over Smith and Surles after seeing them driving a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Police said the two were then positively identified from the video footage.

The two men were taken into custody and transported to the Lee County Jail where they are being held on a $108,000 bond.
