For this year’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Sept. 1, Andrew Yawn, sports editor for The Auburn Plainsman, and Clemson student Robbie Tinsley, sports editor for The Tiger News, answered one another’s questions and offered predictions for the teams’ first game of the season.RT: After Gus Malzahn bolted for Arkansas State, what is everyone’s general feeling on new offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler and his new more traditional-style offense?AY: So far, Auburn fans seem optimistic about Loeffler’s offensive system. It’s more pro-style and is based more on reading defenses than tricking or outrunning them. Plus, the list of quarterbacks he has trained is impressive. The guy helped make Tim Tebow the nation’s most efficient passer in 2009. That’s got to give anybody optimism considering Auburn’s quarterback quandary since Cam Newton left.RT: With power teams like LSU, Alabama, Arkansas and maybe even Texas A&M, how big of a worry is it for Auburn that they could start to lag behind those teams, and how much pressure is on Gene Chizik to make sure that doesn’t happen?AY: There’s always pressure in the SEC. Falling behind any divisional opponent is always a concern, but Gene Chizik doesn’t think that way. In his mind, his team has the ability to win every time it steps on the field. Obviously LSU and Alabama are the favorites, but Auburn sees the team as a sort of dark horse this season.RT: New coordinator on the defensive side as well, but Brian VanGorder at least has some toys to play with that Loeffler might not. Is it safe to say that Auburn will to lean on its defense early in the season?AY: The defense and offense are in the same place as far as learning all new systems from extremely detailed-oriented coaches. The defense has more veteran leadership in senior linebacker Darren Bates, junior linebacker Jake Holland and junior defensive end Corey Lemonier, a Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award watch list pick.AY: With Sammy Watkins out of the lineup against Auburn, who will Clemson lean on to catch the ball in the clutch for Tajh Boyd?RT: You’ll definitely see Tajh Boyd look DeAndre Hopkins’s way more often as he did in the North Carolina game last year when Sammy was dinged up. Hopkins might have the best hands on the team, and I think a lot of Clemson fans think that he’s overlooked in the media spotlight. Outside of Hopkins, look for sophomores Martavis Bryant and Charone Peake to have an increased role with the absence of Watkins. Bryant is more of deep threat, while Peake has a little more bulk and is more of a possession receiver.AY: With last season’s 70–33 loss to West Virginia, is Clemson using that as motivation to prove that was a fluke or has this team put it behind them?RT: I think it’s a little bit of both. I think the defense is definitely using it as motivation and it’s given them a little bit of a chip on their shoulder, but at the same time, they won’t want to dwell on that defeat. I think it’s probably more motivation than anything and not just for the defense, but for the entire team, because all they have heard in the offseason is questions about that game.AY: What can fans expect from Clemson’s defense this season, after losing Andre Branch and hiring Brent Venables as the new defensive coordinator?RT: The best thing we’ve heard is that the defense is a lot simpler than it was last year. With Venables, you will hopefully see a lot less missed assignments, but it’s still a young defense, mostly in the front seven.

On Friday, August 17, the SEC released the schedules for the women's basketball league. The primary difference between this year's and last year's schedules, of course, is the addition of SEC newcomers Missouri and Texas A&M.Auburn will face Texas A&M at College Station on Jan. 13 and will match up against Missouri at home on Feb. 24.The schedule begins with the Wolfpack Invitational Tournament at North Carolina State on Nov. 9-10.From there, the Tigers have a manageable non-conference slate, however, the path gets rough once SEC play begins with Arkansas at home on Jan. 3.The toughest part of the schedule comes a few weeks after with a double-header against two Elite 8 teams: Tennessee and Kentucky. “We are excited about the schedule and looking forward to the upcoming season,” said first-year Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy in a press release. “The SEC is a tough league and we have some tough teams coming into Auburn Arena this season." There is no question that Auburn faces a difficult home schedule, but its road games are even more daunting.Auburn will play four of the top five SEC teams from last year on the road.Auburn must leave the Plains to meet Kentucky, South Carolina and Georgia this season. The Tigers play Tennessee both in Knoxville and at home. Here is the schedule in its entirety (all home games are in bold caps):Nov. 9-10 - Wolfpack Invitational (Raleigh, N.C.)Nov. 15 - ALABAMA STATENov. 18 - ALABAMA A&MNov. 23-24 - 26th Annual Omni Hotels Classic (Boulder, Colo.)Nov. 28 - at TulaneDec. 9 - HOFSTRADec. 12 - at George WashingtonDec. 16 - TEMPLEDec. 19 - TENNESSEE-CHATTANOOGADec. 22 - JACKSONVILLEDec. 29 - SAMFORDJan. 3 - ARKANSASJan. 6 - at MissouriJan. 10 - OLE MISSJan. 13 - at Texas A&MJan. 17 - TENNESSEEJan. 20 - at KentuckyJan. 24 - at AlabamaJan. 31 - LSUFeb. 3 - at South CarolinaFeb. 7 - at GeorgiaFeb. 10 - FLORIDAFeb. 17 - ALABAMAFeb. 21 - at TennesseeFeb. 24 - MISSOURIFeb. 28 - at VanderbiltMarch 3 - MISSISSIPPI STATEMarch 6-10 - SEC Tournament (Duluth, Ga.)

Football's here. It's finally here. It's time to start growing a beard and stop washing whatever pair of underpants you have on right now, because it's almost fall, and Auburn needs every bit of luck to keep a zero in the loss column.

The Tigers ran about 65 plays in addition to assorted drills today in Jordan-Hare Stadium in the team's first scrimmage of fall practice, according to Gene Chizik.

Today Auburn began the switch to a two-a-day practice schedule as the team practiced in shorts and pads in both the morning and the afternoon.
(08/03/12 12:13am)
The second day of practice is over for the Tigers, and the only question really answered so far is why the players' shorts are so tight (they're last season's game pants cut in half, according to Onterio McCalebb).

As each player takes his turn in the spotlight in the Rane Room of the Auburn Athletic Complex, there is a sense of timid optimism. The Tigers have had a tumultuous offseason in which they let their leading rusher Michael Dyer leave, fielded an uncountable number of questions as to who the starting quarterback will be and dealt with the tragedy of the June 9 shooting. And yet, as the players stepped in front of the media one by one, all of their answers had the same ring to it.Wednesday's practice kicked off the beginning of the second installation of both a new offense and a new defense, but the players and Gene Chizik seemed happy with where they are after what Chizik called a "really solid day."Although Wednesday's practice was just in shorts, the players agreed that the practice reaffirmed how hard they worked in the spring and summer."It's amazing how quick we all bought into the system," said red-shirt freshman linebacker Kris Frost of new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder's system. On the offensive side, potential starting quarterback Clint Moseley said new coordinator Scot Loeffler's system is a difficult one to learn quickly, but said it's "definitely the most productive summer" the team has had in his three years at Auburn."We're a lot farther along than we were in the spring," Moseley said. "(But) it demands 100 percent focus all the time.In their first practice of a season with must-win expectations, the team still managed to show a little humor on the field.Senior tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen struck a Heisman pose after saying he could "run a 4.3" 40 yard dash in his stripped down uniform, and wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor threw gum to players as he made quips about the way they were stretching. Here are the highlights from the post-practice interviews:The quarterback battle:Moseley and sophomore quarterback Kiehl Frazier rotated with the first-team offense as Chizik keeps the competition as neutral and balanced as possible. However, Moseley says this might be the fight of his life. "The desperation is there," Moseley said. "There's definitely a sense of urgency."Moseley is coming off a shoulder injury, and despite praise from Chizik saying he is "full go," Moseley said he is not quite 100 percent."But who is really?" Moseley said. For Frazier, he said he has focused on becoming more vocal, his footwork and his reads on the field. However, all indications are that the two friends still both have a chance to snatch the starting quarterback position.Personnel changes:Freshman quarterback Zeke Pike is no longer on the team, according to Chizik. Following Pike's arrest for public intoxication in June, Pike's future with the team was known to be in jeopardy, and Chizik made the decision to let him go in the last "seven to ten days."Sophomore cornerback Jonathan Rose was also dismissed for "personal reasons" and both players will attempt to transfer to other schools, according to Chizik. However Auburn has added wide receiver Melvin Ray to the roster.A 23-year-old former University of Alabama signee, Ray left college football to sign with the Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers where he fizzled out with poor play on the Dodgers' minor league team."He is a physical specimen as far as size for a wide receiver," Chizik said. "We're happy to have him on our team."Shon Coleman also practiced today for the first time.A top offensive line recruit in 2010, his battle with leukemia kept him off the field for the past two seasons. Now, he is cleared to play."I'm really really proud of Shon," Chizik said. "He's loving that he's got an opportunity to play the game again."Keep up with theplainsman.com everyday for more practice updates.
