Auburn teen killed in car crash

An Auburn High School student died in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 on Wednesday afternoon.

Craig Allen Hensarling, 18, was killed when the 2006 Toyota Sequoia he was driving left the road, struck a bridge pylon and caught fire, according to a release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened at 2:30 p.m. in between the 23- and 24-mile markers on the interstate, the release states.

Alabama state troopers are continuing to investigate.

Auburn City Schools released a statement Thursday about the student.

"Auburn City Schools is mourning the loss of one of its students who was killed in a car accident yesterday, Jan. 11, 2017," the statement reads. "We are deeply saddened by this news and will respect the privacy of this family and friends."

Administration and school counselors are providing needed support for staff and students, the school system said. No information about vigils or memorials was available at the time, but the school said it'd share any information about that later.
